“Excellent for Turtle Watching there or at Rekawa”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2013

We stayed for 1 night in a Beach Cabana to see the Sea Turtles at Rekawa Beach, although turtles also lay at the beach in front of the cabanas! They are beautifully made from wood, with an underground wetroom to keep the footprint of the cabana small and simple. The bed was comfortable with clean, with cool cotton sheets and effective mozzie net. Located on the beach in a quiet spot meant that the beach was almost deserted (apart from the crabs and cows) while we were there - complete luxury! The sea here is deep and powerful, and not good for swimming in at any time of day - despite this we did take a brief dip to freshen up, but couldn't stay in as it was quite dangerous.

The Cabanas are located down a difficult to negotiate road and there are seemingly no amenities outside of the resort. The staff were friendly and helpful, with good English. The food was good, although clearly tourist in orientation. They arranged a Tuk Tuk to Rekawa beach for turtle watching, which was 1500 Rupees wait and return.

Overall a beautiful secluded paradise spot, but somewhere I would have got bored with after a couple of days.

We stayed 3 nights at Mangrove Beach Cabanas. The moment we arrived, we felt like home. There's an easy going atmosphere here, and hey what do you expect if you're sitting there, enjoying your cold Lion beer, looking at miles of gold-sand beaches...
We stayed in the rooftop room (the cabanas were fully booked), but this was actually quite ok. It's clean, the bed's ok and there's a constant ocean breeze, so it's not too hot (there is a fan anyway) and you can hear the ocean in the background. The food is very good, and from the restaurant you have a nice view on the beach. Any negative points? Mwah. The shower has cold water only and the ocean in front of the cabanas is too rough, but a 5 min walk brings you to a place where you can swim. Putting things together: it's on a nice spot, it's quiet, it's relaxing, it has good facilities and a nice and helpful staff - if you want to spend your holidays on a Sri Lankan beach, this could be one of those places you dream off.

We did not get the impression that locals are discouraged and had lunch at Mangrove Beach Cabanas. However when asked if we could stay with them on a future day and if locals are entertained, we were vaguely told that most of the time locals do not stay with them, but we could call and check.

I do understand why certain places discourage locals. Most do not know how to behave, including some kids. Mangrove Beach Cabanas seem to promote peace and quiet, and I would like it kept that way.

We stayed in the large beach cabana for four nights, beautiful rooms and great open air bathroom with hot & cold water, set on kilometres of what is in my opinion one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. A nice relaxing bed area outside and lounging restaurant area to relax, play board games in and use the ( intermittent) wifi.

The staff were very friendly and helpful and gave a very relaxed feel to the place (perhaps too relaxed for those wanted finger-click type service) it was clear they loved their coastline and their country and were really enthusiastic in trying to help us find the turtles hatching eggs.

When curry was on the menu, the food was really fantastic, however, two of the four nights they did not have curry available and we didn't fancy the below average western style food that they served (many of the people we met also said the same). The staff seemed reluctant to recommend anywhere else, so we hunted around (on TripAdvisor) so found an incredible restaurant (10min TucTuc to Tangalle bus stop) called Prem, which gave us the best food during the whole of our stay in Sri Lanka.

Plenty of positives and would definitely stay again and recommend to couples but there were a few negatives-the towels are terrible (made of polyester so don't dry), the sea is VERY rough all year round (there is only one part that you can swim in which is quite small and still feels a little menacing to the average swimmer), sometimes the service can be just a little bit too slow ( we waited 35mins for a cocktail on one occasion) the wine is quite expensive (£15) the massage, while cheap was not to the standard I have had elsewhere.

Overall, a relaxing and slow couple of days but don't be afraid to venture out if you're disappointed with the food!

Mangrove beach cabana’s is really a paradise on earth! We loved our stay from beginning to end! The cabana on the beach with view of the ocean was amazing and everything you would ask for. The cabana is open air because it is only made of wood, so a lot of air runs through it and you can hear the crasing waves. The cabana’s have a double bed with mosquito net, a fan and some shelfs. Stairs going down bring you to the big bathroom with a cold shower. We did not really like the towels, because they were from a quick drying kind, which did not dry of well, so we were happy we brought our own. On the beach you have 3 sheltered spots with 2 beach beds. If it is busy, you will have to be lucky to have the sheltered beach beds, because there are 5 cabana’s and 2 bigger chalets (which also have a spot in front to lie in the shade, looked very nice and are brand new), but luckely we had no problem. If you do not have a beachbed, you could also take your towel and relax next to the lagoon. If you are hot, you can jump in the water to cool down. The water in front of the cabana’s is rough, so we did not swim there, but a few minutes to the right you can swim in the lagoon or in the natural beach pool made by rocks in the sea. For couples I can recommend to stay in the beach cabana’s. the beach chalets are not as romantic and are more for families with childeren. You do have a lagoon restaurant there and a beach bar, but the charlets are not on the beach and the charme of the cabana’s was gone. The restaurant is very nice viewing the beach with good food. We stayed based on half board, which included breakfast (you could choose between 5 different breakfast combinations, so for everybody something nice.) For diner you got a starter, which were different small salades or a soup, a main dish and a desert. Usualy eating time is arround 8 pm, but you need to mention upfront when you want to eat. Every day they also offer a special dish if you want. Half board have a seperate menu, but almost everything is included on the menu. If a dish from the regular menu is not on the halfboard menu, but you do want to eat it, you can always eat the dish for lunch, which we did. I do think it is better not to book halfboard, because you do not have to eat a starter every day and the same for the desert. In the evening at arround 9 pm you can make a walk on the beach with a flashlight looking for turtles. At night the turtles come to the beach to lay their eggs. Unfortunately we did not catch them, but they should be there almost every night. You have wifi acces in the restaurant. The location is perfect and the beach is beautifull. This place is really highly recommended, we had an amazing stay!

Room Tip: We stayed in a beach cabana which was perfect and romantic. The beach Chalets are on a different loc...

We stayed in the chalets because the cabanas were full. For an extra five pounds a night we had a beautiful room with a/c, hot shower and balcony, hidden away by the palm trees. The service was impeccable throughout with nothing too much trouble. At night, eating in the restaurant decked over the lagoon, we felt like we were in a five-star beach resort. It's unbelievably good value for what it is and the guy who manages the beach bar and restaurant is doing a fantastic job. What a perfect beach too! (Except the rough sea).

Room Tip: Pay a bit more and get a chalet.

We stayed at the chalets. A wonderfully relaxing end to our holiday. This really is a place for sun and beach worshipers. There is no need for party shoes here, infact there is no real need for any shoes. You step out from your verandah onto the sand!

The service is relaxed and friendly. just remember, there is no rush.

The food is good, but do try the beach front fish restaurant shack next door. Amazing garlic prawns and calamari!

A minor quibble: the rooms a trifle dark, and some of the towels are polyester.
