“A real treat!”
Reviewed March 27, 2012

We stayed here for 3 days and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it! The team are incredibly accomodating and charming. We loved the fact that you can have dinner in a dfferent place from lunch. A stunning wooden clad designed space that was perfect to spend the evening in, drinking cocktails (the best cocktails we had in all of Sri Lanka!) Service was really impressive, especially for Sri Lanka, where we found a lot of places where the workers were unhelpful or rude. You got a real sense that they love what they're doing and are genuinly interested in their guests views and needs.

The beach is gorgeous and has a handy bar to get you're refreshment needs from. The whole resort is very spaced out and private. A thoroughly relaxing stay!!

We stayed in one of the cabana's for our honeymoon. It was so peaceful and beautiful - we couldn't have asked for a more perfect setting. The cabana opened straight on to the beach which we had almost to ourselves for most of our stay.

The helpful staff at the mangrove resort arranged a tour of the lagoon with a local fisherman where we saw monkeys playing in the trees. We would highly recommend it.

It's the most beautiful place we have ever been and we will have to go back.

Ideally located on a sandy beach which is not crowded at all, mangrove chalets are a perfect location for families or couple. Such places with so few building are more and more rare nowadays. The chalets are really sober (light is not enough when night had fallen). People working there are welcoming, breakfast are good. If you stay there, don't miss the fishermen house on the beach to enjoy fresh prawns and grilles fishes while looking to the sea ! Magic Place !

We stayed at the Chalets and 2 days weren't enough. Once you get brought to your chalet (we stayed in a family chalet as the singles were occupied...it was quite large and well maintained) go strait to the beach restaurant and meet Prebad the young and energetic manager of the Chalets. He is super accommodating and makes the experience extremely personal. Make sure to introduce yourself to Prethe the hotels Director and Prebad's boss. He is very nice and helped us negotiate a 2500 rupee discount on our subsequent taxi ride to Yala. I found most hotel staff in Sri Lanka are great at helping you spend more money, Prethe is the only person thus far that has saved me money. My room was spacious, well maintained and clean. No wifi in the main area is a bit of a negative but it also forces you to disconnect. Wifi can be had at the office a short walk away from beach. The food was good local fare, drinks were strong and new restaurant the yjust finished building last month is beautiful.

NOTE: Walking around at night requires a strong flash light and they are not provided so bring one.

We stayed at Mangrove Cabins for three nights. The location of the cabins are excellent, best beach area we have seen in Tangalle. The cabanas are small and basic but good. The staff is excellent, helpful and accommodating. The food was fresh and very good. For a relaxing beach stay, this is the place to be indeed.

Room Tip: Cabin # 3 or 4.

We struggled to find anywhere with spare rooms here so we ended up with a family chalet at this place. Thought we'd landed in heaven. Quiet, with a massive expanse of sand in front and a lagoon behind (if we'd stayed longer, a canoe trip would have been a must). Excellent food and really good staff working there ( I'm not sure their boss really knows just how good they are). The chalet was lovely with a great lounging verandah type area in front. You can't swim on the beach as the rip currents are ferocious, but there is a small rock protected calm bit that you can cool off in even if its too shallow to swim. A great place to chill. They have nearly finished a new bar and restaurant which looks like it will be really something. I rather wished we'd stayed longer.

The place is really nice :
- location : lovely beach, not at walking distance to Tangalle town, but you don't have much reasons to go to Tangalle. The "natural swimming pool" (a part of the beach that is protected from current) is perfect.
- cabanas :basic, but comfortable enough and so nicely designed, very clean as well
- atmosphere : very quiet, there are only few cabanas (5 if I remember), don't expect any fun ambiance
- price : 30 euros + 10% taxes, without breakfast, I believe this is reasonable
- restaurant : a little more expensive than in others places, but not overpriced as some people reported.

The only concern was the staff, and especially the manager, very cold and distant (when we arrived, we asked if we can choose our cabana, the answer was "you are already lucky to get one").

If the staff/manager was nicer, I would have put the best notation.
