“Nice location, not great for swimming”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2013

The beach cabins are nice, and a beach that looks like paradise with hammocks and loungers, and a bar/restaurant open all day and evening. However, the swimming is quite treacherous, I am a good swimmer, and found the waves too strong and dangerous for a swim, the current is very powerful along this stretch of beach (for quite some miles it seems - we did walk to find a good swim spot but wouldn't find one). Locals are aware of this, so you really don't see many/any swimmers. You'll need to go further down the coast for a good/safe swimming beach.

Our room was a $30 cabana, and was clean/comfortable. Only fans available but was still cool!
The restaurant was averagely priced but wasn't a huge selection. Hammocks, sun Ioungers and volleyball were available. Location not ideal as it was down a very bumpy track but accessible by tuk tuk (150rupees)! The manager was very helpful at arranging all manner of trips (yala/turtles), by tuk tuk/taxi and with reputable companies!

We stayed there in August 2013 for 3 nights. Staff was very friendly, the food was very good, the rooms are nice and clean, some on the beach, others on the laguna. Waves are quite strong there so it's hard to swim in the ocean but there is an hotel with a swimming pool just next door. A very nice place to stay overall.

Initially we wondered where we were being taken to as we passed all the other accommodation along the beaches - but we sound found we had been recommended a great place! The grounds are beautiful, it is right on the beach and the rooms are lovely, we were in one of the rooms near the front with a sea view from our little balcony. I really enjoyed the couple of nights we spent here, and the staff were helpful with our onward travel plans. Thank you for a great stay

I Have stayed in Ganesh Gardens several times over the years and I remember it being one of my favourite places to stay when I first came to Sri Lanka in 2009.

However I feel it is surviving on it's past glory and taking it's customers for granted. The grounds are still great and the rooms are ok for the price though they need updating. The new cabanas on the lagoon are much better because they are new. the prices are reasonable for the area but higher than the majority of beach side accomidation around Sri Lanka. this is a problem throughout tangalla to be honest. the problem is that they over charge for food and drinks and your bill ends up being huge. other places nearby that have food at a similiar price offer you a much better meal. they should either reduce the menu price or spend a little more on making the food better value for money.

overall it is still a great place to stay and taking the free canoes out for a ride is awesome! a little love and care will easily turn this place back into the best place to stay in Tangalle

We checked out Mangrove first and it looked nice but was way over priced (70Euro). We went to Ganesh afterwards and was immediately blown away by the place. Hard to explain how good was. To top it off, it was substantially cheaper. We paid 28 euro for a room just as good as Mangrove.

At Ganesh, you can relax in one of the numerous hammocks and grab a beer from the beachside restaurant.

Yes, he restaurant is over priced and not the best but any seafood we had was great. I wanted to have crab one night so the owner organised some from the market. I asked to have it with a couple of prawns and some squid. The crab once cooked was not as meaty as it should be (apparently you cant tell till after it is cooked) so they added more prawns and squid... and half a lobster!

Highly recommend this place.

Room Tip: Get some crab

This is a great location with fabulous grounds, plenty of places to relax on the beach including shaded hammocks which were perfect. Rooms were basic a little small but nice balcony. Generally clean but pillow had some mould on it. Food was a bit overpriced - breakfast was good one day and average the next, recommend walking down to Ibis for cheaper options. Very quiet in low season so bargain for room prices but you will have the place to yourselves so its nice if you like that. Staff were friendly and can organise transport for you etc
Overall I recommend for the lovely grounds especially if you can get a discounted price for a room
