“Really nice hotel”
Reviewed April 8, 2011

Stayed 3 nights as part of a tour. Can't understand the negative comments in other reviews. We were led to believe by the tour operator we stayed in the nicer rooms, was sceptical at the time, but maybe explains some of the comments.
The tour operator put us in 6 'international' hotels in Sri Lanka and to me this one of the best.
The hotel is all 'open', no walls except for rooms. Refreshingly different, a modern hotel that is not of a standard hotel design and layout. Staff were very welcoming and could not be faulted. It was noticable that staff in isolated places like this were far better than in Columbo and Kandy. If only you could get staff like this in Europe or North America.
Food was good with a wide range. The pool area, probably the trademark of the hotel with it view of the rock is memorable.
Only downside is perhaps the monkeys, when the novelty of them wears off. They seemed to have developed very intricate routines over the years to divert people's attention and get hold of their food.
Only hotel that did not have WiFi, but had a couple of PC's by reception in a room for a couple of hundred roupees.

Village, 5 minutes walk from hotel with a small supermarket that seemed to have most things you could need was nice.
If the heat and humidity doesn't affect you too much, you could conceivably walk tgo Sigiriya Rock from hotel.

Stayed here for 3 nights in March 2011 - although the hotel was booked as part of a tour we were a group of 2 and not a big coach tour.

We really liked this hotel. The grounds are attractive, staff generally very friendly and the location is ideal for the rock. As far as the rooms are concerned they were comfortable and roomy. As mentioned elsewhere the bathrooms are a bit basic, but there were no problems with the hot water.

Food was actually very good, concidering the very large numbers of customers the hotel has. The dining area does fill up with large coach tours, but nevertheless the quality of the food was reasonably high and the service good.

We came back from days out on a couple of occasions and used the pool in the late afternoon - very pleasant. There is a small village a 7 or 8 min walk from the Hotel. Makes a pleasant walk - lots of monkeys in the trees along the road, and the shops there sell water and pop at a rate far below that of the hotel.

Gripes. All small but avoidable. The room safe didnt work when we got there - reported it and maintenance guys came out. They couldnt fix it but promised they would be back with new batteries. In an hour. Never saw tham again. We were woken up early by a persistent banging on the room door - got out of bed and there was a porter asking for our laundry. We didnt want any laundry doing so this was annoying. And the hotel internet wasn't great - a couple of PCs in a back office which seemed to work intermittently.

But these are little things - generally this is a really pleasant hotel - good food, comfortable rooms and pleasant staff. Would stay here again.

Sigiriya Hotel is situated 62 km from Colombo International airport. This is a budget hotel built far from any settlements and first of all for tourists who come to visit Sigiriya rock. The hotel is a single-storey building. Each room has exit to a small patio where you can find a variety of tropical plants. The rooms are spacious and offer all modern amenities. The restaurant offers a good selection of local and international cuisine, fresh juices and pastry are available any time, in the evening you can listen to live music having your dinner. There is a jewel shop at the hotel, a nice bar and 2 swimming pools (one for kids and one for adults). Even if you find this hotel a bit rustic, you will never forget your stay here, in the place of real relaxation. Fabulous air, ground-squirrels jumping on the trees and a band of monkeys playing on the roof, maximum of plants and flowers and minimum of people you can meet daily. This is a paradise for people who like eco trips and quiet relaxing holidays. This is one of the best places in the world where I was happy to stay and sure to return back one day.

We stayed 2 nights at Hotel Sigiriya as a part of our 2weeks trip in Sri Lanka. We were given room 1 which I believe is one of the larger rooms, at the far end of the complex, so it was nice and quiet.
The room was generous in size but maybe lacking in furniture with the tv quite a way away at the other end of the room from the bed, and a simple desk, chair and dressing area. The bathroom was large in size with variable hot water availability.
The room was clean but the red tiles on the floor did lead me to believe at one point that I had cut my foot and bled on the bathroom floor!
Sri Lanka has had some recent significant floods and heavy rain which may have been the reason for the continuous air of dampness and damp smell lingering in the room and bathroom - this meant towels and swimwear were difficult to dry during our stay and clothes felt damp for a day or two after leaving the hotel.
The bar and pool area have a great view of Lion Rock - part of the preparation for walking up and playing 'spot the hotel and pool' from the top of Lion Rock.
The buffet in the main restaurant was very varied and very good for both breakfast and dinner with hot chef stations preparing barbecue fish/meat, stir-fry, omelettes etc. alongside the buffet.
The pool was a little cool but nice to splash about in after a walk up the rock - I'm sure on a hot and sunny day it's a little more welcoming!
Wifi signal was intermittent but this again may have been due to heavy rain and the network dropping.

Honestly, I cannot understand the negative reviews of this hotel. I spent 10 days here with my daughter and we had an amazing time. I was truly sorry to leave. The staff (particularly the waiters, cooks, bar staff and house staff) were incredibly friendly and quietly efficient and professional. No effort was spared to make us feel happy and comfortable. My daughter had her 13th birthday here and chef made a cake while the waiters decorated her table with flowers. She was made to feel very special. The food was incredibly good with an amazing choice available. We particularly liked the stir fries which were absolutely delicious.
Admittedly the room was a little musty on arrival and, yes, the curtains and lamp shades were a little stained, but it had been raining for three months in Sri Lanka and the hotel is right in the middle of the jungle which is very humid. I think perhaps white/cream is not the best colour for these. The rooms were cleaned to a high standard daily and the inventiveness of the bed linen arrangements was awesome! The bathrooms do need updating. The wall colour was a bit drab and I could have done without the energy-saving lightbulbs in the bathroom but the shower was efficient and at least there was plenty of hot water.
The hotel grounds were superb. There was plenty of wild life to be seen and the pool was fantastic. The lobby, bar area and dining room were also very attractive. The location of the hotel couldn't be better, with fantastic views of Lion Rock and convenient for jungle and village walks. Hotel Sigiriya is ideally situated for trips within the Cultural Triangle and we easily managed Kandy and nearby sights (Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Botanical Gardens) within a day without a horrendously early start. We also managed an overnight stay at Nilaveli, near Trincomalee, very comfortably.
My only gripes would be these: On arrival I think we should have been informed of everything the hotel had to offer - ie. badminton, table tennis, tennis, Ayurvedic massage. Some of these we had to find out for ourselves and did not discover until our penultimate day there. Communication could have been better from reception staff.
Second gripe: The hotel relies too much, I think, on the large groups of European tourists that stay only one or two nights. These types contribute nothing to the ambience of the hotel and stick exclusively to themselves. For us, the hotel in the evening was a bit boring until a few groups of independent travellers arrived who actually seemed to want to communicate with other guests and enjoy the thrilling cricket matches on TV.
All in all, we had a fantastic stay here and would recommend it to all.

Hotel Sigiriya is one of those places you stay when you have little choice of anywhere else to go in your price range. It isn't bad - it's just nothing to write home about.

The rooms are fine but a bit boring. The bathrooms were actually the worst part - our bathtub had grout peeling off and everything just felt a bit dirty and dingy. The entrance and pool are actually pretty nice. The view of Sigiriya is great. The restaurant was nothing special, but it was cheap and convenient.

Overall I would say that unless you can afford to stay in the much more expensive accomodations this is fine for mid-range but just be prepared to not love it.

Good location. Nice view of the rock. Rooms are in need of improvement, especially the bathrooms (see photos). Food quality - ok.

Note: If you book through a guide / travel agency, you cannot pay the hotel with credit card but required to pay to the guide in cash.
