I spend a night in this nice new Hotel in Sigiriya. When you arrive the wide open lobby, the first thing you see is the stunning view to the Sigiriya rock fortress by overlooking the huge pool. I felt a warm welcome at the arrival and the check in was very uncomplicated. The rooms are quite nice. They are hosting also nice luxury tents, which were unfortunately fully booked, so no upgrade was possible. The food was fine and the staff was very nice and they were caring about me in a very nice way.

Room Tip: Best rooms in the hotel are definitely the luxury tents, but also the Standard rooms are very nice.

Opened 6 months ago so our room was super clean and looked great with new fixtures and fittings.
The 40 m infinity pool is a gem. The kids used it twice a day.
Food was excellent and service very attentive. The manager assured us that the buffet area chefs would prepare anything that the kids would like even if it was not on the buffet menu. A refreshing can do attitude.
For this price however I would like to have free wifi in the rooms, at present it is limited to the entrance hall/ reception.

I would stay here again and consider using it as a base for exploring the area attractions.

Room Tip: Hard to comment as we did not see other available rooms.

It was really nice to stay in one of the luxury tents. The experience was great. The food as well as attentiveness of staff is also great pluses.

However, lack of WiFi, as well as poor level of privacy in terms of arrangement of tents and restaurant dining are concerns.

Overall, it was an experience worth for money.

Room Tip: Go for a tent though it feels a less roomy........

...but unfortunately, it wasn't.

Aliya comes with all the trappings of a great hotel - big bedrooms, fancy bathrooms, three restaurants, hundreds of eager staff, and everything being meticulously clean. However great hotels have something that Aliya does not have - competent staff.

The examples of this incompetence are numerous...

...When ordering a la carte in the main restaurant (they strongly discourage doing so instead of the buffet) the waiter came back THREE times to clarify the order of two starters and two mains....

...The food is just ok. The chefs clearly know what they're aiming for, but none of it is especially good. Quantity of dishes (both on the buffet and spread across 3 menus) is used as a substitute for real quality...

...An ethos which is shared by the waiting staff. At one point it took four of them to show two of us to our table at diner...

..We tried one of the smaller restaurants one night. Big mistake. When a chef is running round a swimming pool with your starters under silver-foil, you know you're in trouble. Apparently something to do with recent guest numbers and a requirement to pre-book, that is both noted nowhere (we subsequently checked) and this was only mentioned when we went on strike over some stone cold chicken wings...

...They tell you with pride about a turn-down service, and event which involves them (aside from the obvious sheet-related activities) laying local plant leaves strategically around the room. Yet this only happened 1 of the 3 nights we were there...

..towels were taken away and not replaced when the room was made up...

...we had mojitos three nights running and every time they tasted dramatically different (and on one such occasion I could have sworn contained gin)...

...even though the bar was advertised as closing at midnight, at 1130pm our bill was brought to us, unrequested...

...I could go on and on.

Ultimately, this is not the most expensive hotel in sri lanka (obviously its pricey, but not top top tier), so please don't come here thinking you might be getting a good deal. In the words of the 17 year old estate agent who took me house-hunting:

"You get what you pay for".

"We're in the middle of nowhere", the 12-year old proclaims wryly. That's the sense one gets of Aliya's expansive swimming pool area, which glistens invitingly during the day and sparkles temptingly with its underwater lighting at night. The worries of life melt away effortlessly. Architecturally Aliya is a mish mash of Japanese Zen, Sri Lanka and Africa. The common motif is the elephant (translation of Aliya), which pepper the spaces.

International buffet dinner was excellent value at SLR2300. Singled out for superb quality - fish cutlet (melt in the mouth) & breads (pillow soft). Buffet breakfast also had very good variety -- try the juices (banana, king coconut) and skip the dishwater-quality coffee.

Did not try the hotel spa because our guide recommended another Ayurvedic spa just outside the hotel which turned out to be mediocre. On hindsight, I should have paid a little more for the convenience of the hotel spa.

My only grouse was that wifi connection was only available at the reception area.

We stayed in the suite in the Aliya resort. There were two full rooms and bathrooms, our own pool, and a beautiful view of Sigiriya.

We enjoyed a full breakfast featuring western food and Sri Lankan food. There was also fresh fruits and juice. Everybody there was very helpful and kind.

I would definitely recommend staying here for any occasion.
