The walk through the gardens was a great lead-up to climbing the rock. At the base it seemed like there were quite a few routes up, ultimately they all lead to the same staircase, but it was fun exploring in the shade. Don't feed the monkeys unless you want a whole troop after you.
The climb itself is easy and the view from the top is incredible. We didn't use any guides and I don't think it diminished the experience.
I'd recommend having a Coke or something at the little kiosk before entering the gardens because you'll get pretty hot going up. There are lots of drink vendors before the car park once you get down though.
The price of the ticket is quite steep but there's not much you can do about that because this is a must-see attraction.
