Owner description: Sigiriya is the most exquisite example of ancient Sri Lankan art, architecture and landscaping. Built over 1,600 years ago, the now sinister-looking 600 ft high black rock once appeared like a massive dazzling white cloud floating above the surrounding forests. Its sides were painted with beautiful frescoes of semi-naked nymphs. A large gatehouse in the form of a lion guarded the entrance to the innermost sanctum of the city – the Sky Palace on top of the rock. Sigiriya burst briefly into pre-eminence and was then abandoned and lay hidden in the forests for nearly 1,500 years. The climb to the top is strenuous but it is worth it. Definitely a must visit site!

Spectacular site and well worth the time, effort and exorbitant price. The mess and ramshackle state of the site on the top does not detract from the views and the remains of the architecture. Please could the authorities tidy up the top of the fortress (remove the litter as a minimum) and include a guide with the very expensive entrance price. Regulate the crowds of touting guides at the site.

Quite expensive if you don't hold a Sri Lankan passport, however price is comparable to visiting the zoo in Australia. Beautiful & awe inspiring when you consider the planning & hard work that went into creating this immense fortress. The remains tell quite a lot but would love to see a recreation of what archeologists think it would have looked like.

This was by far one of the coolest places that I have ever been to. It was beautiful and full of history. The frescos were very cool and the view from the top breathe taking. I highly recommend this place to anyone.

Very impressive! Don't miss this site. Go early to beat the crowds and the heat. It's a place is beaming with nature. I love the natural and architectural aspects of the place. It starts from the very bottom and ends on the very top, in between a steep climb that can make you breath: a unique historic experience. Worth every minute!
