Elephant Corridor Hotel

This special hotel is perfect for private time, in a totally luxurious setting. The honeymoon suite has all the amenities of the individual bungalows, plus a mirrored four poster and a bathing pool in the bedroom, which is strewn with floating candles and flower petals! In your private garden you can be waited on hand and foot by a team of chefs and waiters, who will arrange a spectacular BBQ , with silver and crystal, fairy lights and food and wine of your choice. The grounds are full of wild life. The pool is luxurious . There are no meal times- you can eat what you like when and where you choose. You can sun bathe in the buff on your daybed in your garden. All the bungalows and amenities are fabulous, but it can be overly quiet after a while, so three or four nights is about right for us. Quite expensive, but worth it for a special treat An elephant can be arranged for your wedding in the Presidential suite. No cars are allowed near the hotel. They will collect you from the gates by golf buggy.

My husband and I travelled to Sigiriya on our honeymoon having prebooked the Elephant Corridor from the UK. It is most unlike anywhere I have ever stayed before - a truly unique experience.

We'd booked a Romantic Suite which overlooked the lake, was secluded and uniquely furnished with a private plunge pool and large four poster with (slightly disconcerting!) mirrors above it.

The grounds are simply wonderful - just the walk to the swimming pool is like a trail through a butterfly farm or bird sanctuary - there's lots of space to explore and it's spacious enough that I imagine that even at full capacity a guest may enjoy plenty of seclusion. Nearby tanks (manmade lakes) serve many birds and occasionally elephants - although we didn't see any, it was fun to walk through the jungle in the late afternoons in the hope we may spot some. We booked a nature walk with the hotels naturalist – highly recommended – who pointed out many of the area’s indigenous and migratory birds that we would not previously have noticed.

The hotel offers all the usual facilities of a five star - room service, gym, swimming pool, spa treatments, minibar etc. But aside from location, the real character of Elephant Corridor is found in the staff who, whilst being extremely efficient and polite, manage not to adopt the lifeless subservience of some five star hotels and were fun and conversational - if you liked. Many an evening we enjoyed talking with the hotel manager Wije, whilst the head chef Clarence went out of his way to prepare us different Sri Lankan dishes every night – and they were fantastic.

Someone on Trip Advisor had previously commented on the stale bread (!) – I didn’t notice the bread being stale – tasted fine to me - but I wouldn’t travel to Sri Lanka for good bread anyway. We didn’t eat international cuisine whilst we were there – purely because of that old adage; when in Rome. Sri Lankans cook fantastic Sri Lankan food. Even in a five star hotel – if you want good bread, go to France. And in response to the other comment about frogs in the plunge pool – Elephant Corridor invites you to “breathe the spirit of wilderness” which may occasionally mean frogs and other ‘wild’ animals. Although we didn’t see any snakes (or experience frogs in the plunge pool) if you’ve an aversion to “breathing the spirit of wilderness” then this isn’t the place for you!

It’s hard to find fault with Elephant Corridor, but to make it a fair review; if I return, the only improvements I’d like to see would be maintenance to the pool – it’s lovely but the tiles are worn and sharp in places – and perhaps the plunge pools are a bit too cold! (daft considering I swim in the sea off the Cornish coast year round!). Also, I think that hotel of this calibre should provide free drinking water (the bottles in the minibar were chargeable) and free internet access.

But, overall, Elephant Corridor is full of character and simply beautiful.

Heard about Elephant Corridor from friends and then went to stay there. It was truly a rewarding experience. Not everyone can afford to stay there as it is a bit expensive but worth staying. This boutique hotel is located inside the real bush. Apart from the hotel area, the rest are real jungle. From the restaurant, it has a panoramic view of the Sigiriya, Kandalama hills and vast nature.
Though we were an elderly couple but were given the Romantique suite. The room had a plunge pool inside. Very nice suite with sitting place, verandah and a lovely view. The bathroom is a wonderful place. Very cosy room. I enjoyed having very cold plunge in the pool in my privacy.
We don;t know how we passed two wonderful days together. Time just flew. There were complimentary foot massage at the spa centre which was Ok. A nice pool area where we enjoyed some drinks while a family was having nice time in the pool. Away from all crowds, we could relax in the wild nature and walked on the walkways.
The hotel is eco friendly and does not allow any vehicle to come inside. From the parking lot, a golf vehicle brings the guests inside the hotel. The reception area is in a wide open place and the way they welcomed us is truly memorable. The Manager took great care of us, the staff were very friendly and was always ready to help us. Truly a great place to relax. But those who want to see crowds, loud music, menicured gardens throughout the hotel, this is not for them. It is for those people who want to stay in very quiet place away from all city life amenities.

We have never forgotten our three night stay at the Elephant Corridor! Our room took our breath away and the staff could not have been more professional or solicitous. We felt pampered and cared for while breathing in the wonders of the Sigirya! Don't miss this in your lifetime!!!

a truely beautiful hotel. if you need peace and quite, there is no place like elephant corridor. kids have ample activity and are kept busy all day long. after a long day they can jump into the great big pool or the mini one in the room.

the staff is great and makes your stay truelly memorable and relaxed. we loved the food. truely authentic. the BBQ they throw on request is out of this world. but you need to choose well.

total relaxation............................

We wanted to get married in Sr Lanka and chose the Elephant Corridor as we both love wildlife and elephants.
The hotel manager and staff did absolutely everything possible to make our day so very special - it was fantastic from start to finish.
Our driver, Shiral, took us to a Sari shop in Kandy [we also saw the temple] where the staff helped me to try on and select a beautiful red and gold silk sari. The material was stunning and it glowed in the sunshine. My fiance was attired by the hotel staff in a traditional white shirt and sarong with silk scarf - they even matched the trim on his clothes to my sari.
Our limo to the wedding site in the Presidential Villa was Banda the elephant who very patiently had a gentle hello with his trunk before we went up the gantry to get onto his back. I shall upload pictures....
We were proceeded by Kandyan Dancers and Drummers who were magnificant and completely entrancing in their graceful steps and whirling routines.
Arriving at the venure we had blessings sung by young girls, signing of the registry and then a lovely buddhist ceremony. The wedding cake was 3 tiers and delicious, as was the traditional Sr Lankan sweets for breakfast. To finish a lovely bottle of tattinger champagne was cracked and certainly enjoyed.
What was lovely was that it was just the two of us had come to Sri Lanka for the wedding, but all the hotel staff turned out and we were made to feel so very welcome and special for the whole day - nothing was too much trouble in fact for our entire 7 day stay. We were upgraded to the romantic suite for the rest of our time at the hotel.
The lunch and dinner menu provided for the wedding day were superb, with choices for main meals. We discussed menu options with the executive chef and were able to try typical Sri Lankan dishes [toned down for us!]I- I can recommend the hoppers, scrummy....in fact the food was consistently of high quality and the bread and pastries was particularly scrumptious! We had our evening meal on the lawn [our choice] in front of the bar...and listened to the roar of the elephants under the stars . We saw water buffalo, egrets, kites, birds of paradise, grey langour monkeys [ gorgeous but shy]...more birds than I know. It was blissful to just sit and watch the wildlife from the daybed in the garden of our room and dip into the plunge pool to cool off. We preferred the main pool in the afternoon - either a short walk or a quick golf buggy ride through the jungle path to a beautiful spot surrounded by trees [and near the monkey route] Attention here was excellent and we had tea and fruit delivered to the pool at 4pm when we were there.
My thanks go to the whole team st Elephant Corridor for making our wedding so very memorable and perfect....
