“A dream hotel”
Reviewed December 1, 2012

A wonderful hotel. Rooms very very spacious, own plunge pool at the back with a patio table and chairs and an artist's easel and equipment for guests to sketch and paint. It was very private with no-one able to overlook your room. The little pools by the front door were delightful with great pondlife - frogs etc to observe. The beds were huge - almost too big, positioned opposite a wall of windows with views over rolling grasslands where you could see lots of birdlife and small animals. Bathrooms were huge with magnificent showers. Between the bathroom and bedroom areas was an equally large dressing room area. There was even room in the bedroom for a sofa and table and chairs and it still to have acres of space to move around in. We dined in our room once and were treated to waiters coming and setting up the table and the food arriving on plates covered with silver domes - all piping hot and delicious. We also ordered a cup of tea in our room and two waiters came, one to serve the tea and one to proffer the box with an unbelievable choice of different types of tea. We were offered a complimentary massage (either foot or head) on arrival. Golf buggies were available to ferry guests around if they didn't want to walk. The pools were very good, clean well maintained and had good quality loungers around to relax in. Food was very tasty, menu had a good variety of dishes. Great views of Sigyra rock from the restaurant. My only gripe was the internet connection was so poor it was practically non existent, so don't bother trying to get a connection, it wastes too much time and you will be charged for time mostly spent waiting for it to load although to be fair we challenged this charge and it was removed.

We spent two nights at the Elephant Corridor, and it was one of the best hotels we've been to ever! The place is very special, and the rooms are huge with a plunge pool for each room. We booked through Red Dot tours (highly recommend) as art of a package, so we paid much less than the rack rates.

we are a group of ten friends who were travelling in Sri Lanka for almost two weeks. when we arrived at the hotel it seemed a bit desert... the rooms must have been in the past excelent.Today the furniture is old, th bathooms have no air-conditioning and it´s very unconfortable to take a shower in high temperatures... at the doors there are small pools with "dead water and plants". good for insects....malaria. the service at the dinner was slow, slow with many waiters that "danced" but couldn´t do correctly their job.No air conditioning....windows opened... more insects...and the bill in dolars( THERE WAS NO AMERICAN FLAG) with a very high exchange rate. of course we paid in rupias.. shame..shame. And the laundry service turned blue all the white clothes. HORRIBLE!! doors should be closed imediatly....

We stayed at this hotel for two night along with 3 other families using an American Express Card offer of stay one night free.

Rooms:
As went to get refreshed post our journey from Colombo I noticed a that the washroom had a terrible smell of a dead rat coming from the drains. This was brought to the notice of the staff immediately. Even though the smell subsided on the first day, the smell subsequently returned the next day. When I went to take a Bath, I realized that the shower was broken and the water sprayed all over (see picture of broken shower in the washroom). The floor in the washroom was waxed and polished and no rug was kept near the bathtub. My wife slipped and fell and injured her foot as a result (see picture of waxed floor without rug near bathtub). My cousin’s room adjoining to ours did not have a bidet near the commode in their washroom. The air-conditioning in our room took a long time to cool and on informing housekeeping, they stuck a teaspoon to the place where the room keys are stuck in, so the air-conditioning would keep running even while we were out of the room.

Food:
We had informed the hotel that our entire group does not eat Fish or Pork. Nevertheless, the set menu offered for lunch had a choice between spicy Sri-Lankan chicken + rice or a fish item or pastas. Naturally by default we had to select pasta or spicy Sri Lankan chicken + rice (see picture of spicy Sri Lankan chicken + rice). For dinner there was a buffet but again meat items were limited to a chicken curry or fish and again the menu was very Sri Lankan. second day lunch was yet another same story of Sri lankan food and at dinner they had thrown in duck as an additional meat item. I was quite surprised to see that the chicken curry had chicken pieces no bigger than one cubic inch. Oddly this boutique hotel's buffet layout did not carry name boards and we had to keep asking if the items had any fish in them or not (see picture of buffet layout without name boards). For breakfast on the first day, there were plain and chocolate muffins in two plates. Again funnily, on the second day, the leftover muffins from the previous day had been combined to a single plate where few were plain and rest chocolate. This assumption of mine proved to be correct as no refills were made by the staff. The soups for the buffet were either dhaal soup or mutton watery stew (Yuk!). The food that we had at this so called boutique hotel failed to meet the quality standard of even a 3-star hotel down south. The cook seemed capable of only Sri Lankan food again and again. Not much variety to the palette.

Extra curricular activities:
Don’t get fooled by their website. They don’t have any elephants for rides and they don’t own any horses either. The stable is now used as a store room. The archery has no arrows. They do have nice bicycles and a cricket net but hey we didnt come here to play that sport (which is very common). The main pool is nice but had leaves in the water which the pool boy was nice enough to clean while we swam there. Unfortunately, there was a bush fire that day and burnt ash had also got blown away to the pool. We decided to nevertheless still go ahead and swim and make the most of it since it would have taken ages for the one pool attendant to clean the pool up. Even though each room has a mini plunge pool, we decided not to use it as it had dirt and leaves in the water. (see picture of mini plunge pool with leaves and dirt). At least the main pool gets cleaned by the pool attendant.

Restaurant service:
We experienced amateurish service in the resturant at this hotel. The restaurant staff was not trained and took ages to bring food on the day we arrived (which was a set menu). It was a good that the hotel decided to make all the other meals buffets as otherwise the staff would have played hell. Nevertheless, even at the buffet the service was awful. When water was requested, we were given normal water. When iced water was asked it was initially refused by one waiter. Thereafter, asking another waiter would yield some results. It would sometimes take over 30mins for water to arrive and when inquired why, the reason was that they ran out of ice and had to run to the bar to get ice. When tea or coffee was requested after breakfast or lunch cups would arrive and then after repeated reminders finally after a long time the tea/coffee would arrive. It would take them another quarter hour to bring the milk by which time the tea/coffee poured to the cups would have gone cold. Soem of the guys decided to have black cofee to avoid this.

We requested for a barbeque dinner for the second night, which was turned down by the Manager Mr Asanga. Thereafter, a request for meals in our rooms was also flatly refused by him. This hotel boasts of ability for guests to dine anywhere they wish but the truth is much different. The second day we wanted to have some tea and cakes around 4pm near the pool area. This was informed to Mr Asanga around 2.30pm post lunch but the hotel required two hours to organize butter cakes as they didn’t seem to have any in store. The excuse for two hours time was that the preparation for the cake took time. My wife is able to make a butter cake in 45-60mins time maximum!. We finally had to cancel this as they were not able to have the cake ready by 4pm with the tea.

On the first day we were told by the reception that breakfast starts at 6.30am. However, when at 7am we arrived at the restaurant they were not ready and asked we come later (without giving us an exact time). When we went back at 7.20am the senior person in the restaurant spoke very rudely to my friend's wife and slammed the restaurant door on her face.

The air-conditioning in the restaurant didn’t work from the time we arrived till we left. Finally after much pleading one fan was placed near our table. Have you ever been to a boutique hotel where its restaurant runs without proper airconditioning? (see picture of the fan placed near our dining area) When we complained of the service, the hotel insulted us with a 5% discount. We told them that we dont want a discount - only want good food and good service.

Reception:
The only plus point going for this hotel is the reception staff and Mr Panduka who seems to be genuingly concerned for the guests. The resturant staff dont seem to care two hoots!. I felt that the restaurant staff had ganged up together against the otherrs as ultimately, our luggage too was collected personally by Mr. Panduka himself.

Positive:
Only the View

Advice; Not worth the $275 paid (LKR35,625) for a double two nights at this hotel. There are hotels with better service and food than this one.

Room Tip: Make sure to check the rooms thoroughly before agreeting to accept them. Some washrooms have bad odo...

went to the hotel after hearing a lot about it, was suppose to be one of the first boutique hotels in sri lanka, when we reached we were very excited and the welcome was great. the rooms were good it was like a boutique hotel n what could be expected, but all the excitement came to a complete stop when we walked into the restaurant. the staff at the restaurant were terrible n rude, they were doing their jobs as if they were forced to do them, the 6 meals we had at the hotel were all the same, a sinhalese menu which was repeated over, lunch leftovers were re used for dinner. ac not working. no interest to make anything, complaints were made worse by the manager who didnt bother to correct anything, we left really dissapointed. will never visit again.

Room Tip: all rooms are similiar, no need to request anything special.

Superb location but that's it. There is serious potential for this hotel. The property needs refurbishment and and the food needs to improve. The staff does try real hard, but they need training for the standard that hotel management advertises.

This hotel is perfect if the management decides to make it a budget resort to which category I would personally slot in to.

The management of the hotel can improve this property with refurbish the hotel. Mainly the dinning area and other living areas, improving on the food quality and selection, and train the staff in a manner appropriate to the standard that they wish to achieve. The location and the setting of the property is amazon and breath takin which is a serious plus.

We stayed here in July 2012 with our two daughters. It is beautiful! The villas are large, with lovely decor, huge unusual bathrooms and private plunge pools. The service was outstanding from reception to the poolboy, just wonderful! We stayed 2 nights to start our tour of Sri lanka and the only complaint was that we were the only guests! The hotel was empty, a very strange feeling indeed.
The restaurant was good but very expensive, prices in US$. The food was good but was overpriced. It was a shame we were the only guests as there was no atmosphere when dining and although the waiting staff were so good at their job and took a real pride in their work, it was a little uncomfortable to eat with the whole staff standing to one side awaiting your finish!

I loved the Elephant Corridor and would recommend it. The staff are really welcoming and they loved to practise their English with us (which was very good!). My little girls loved it here especially the easel and pastels in the rooms and the plunge pool!
