“Unique experience”

We really loved staying at thick forest. It was a bit like posh camping really with wooden huts suspended high in the trees. It was wonderful t be able to spot our roof tops from the top of sigiriya rock, they really sit alone in the middle of the jungle.

We ate here both nights as there is not really anywhere else to go apart from the sigiriya hotel and the food was very good. It gave us a chance to try lots of different things, some of which we loved and some we didn't but it was interesting and all well cooked.

We went to the sigiriya hotel to use their pool both days and only paid 1.25 each time. Their pool is great but I think our treehouses provided us with more fun.

We spent two nights here and it was a great base to explore the area (we went to Sigiriya rock, Dambulla caves and on safari at Kaudulla National Park - lots of birdlife and elephants, highly recommended). It's a unique place to stay, remote and really is in the middle of the forest. Lots of wildlife, including some very noisy cicadas and various sounds on the roof during the night! The staff were very friendly and the food was good too, great curry in the evening and hoppers for breakfast, as well as some more western fare. No choice for either meal, but that wasn't a problem. Staying in a treehouse is a unique experience and they have great views of the rock, the rooms are modest but clean with a mosquito net over the bed, a fan (very useful) and the bathrooms within the treehouses are good (ours had a resident frog!). We moved on the second night as the first treehouse (number 3) was higher up and moved quite a lot in the strong winds which made it a bit difficult to sleep! The second treehouse (number 1) was lower down and a bit more spacious. Recommended, especially if you're looking for something on the basic side but still interesting and unique.

Room Tip: If you don't mind blowing in the wind, room 3, for a better night's sleep, less movement and...

I tend to agree with most people here. This is a unique experience. Staying in a treehouse was cool. What suprised me is that the bathrooms in the treehouse was better than some other hotels we stayed in.

You can see the Sigiriya rock from the hotel. But I would highly recommend having a mode of transportation to get around as this place is a bit difficult to find and it is in the middle of a jungle.

The cook did a great job, the menu is limited (set) and if you are not into spicy food you might struggle with it. So better arrange something else with the hotel if you want a western breakfast.

The rooms were cozy and comfortable, No AC, but they provide mosquito nets and fan. We slept quite comfortably.

If you are just visiting the rock, one day is enough, if you are nature lover, a couple of days wouldn't do harm.

Room Tip: All Rooms are facing the rock. Let the mgr know the time you want breakfast the day before. I sugg...

This hotel is off course not for everyone. You are kind in the jungle, with the best view to the sigiriya rock. The rooms i.e. tree houses are sweet. You have a nice balcony with a great view, a good bed, hot water, new toilet but it is basic and more of a backpacker than mid range and group traveler style.

The guys running the place are very nice and the diner was one of the best we had in two weeks. I would do it again - only 4 points because of the a bit to high price - which might be because I did book trough are driver who got some bucks for himself.

Excellent place where to be to visit Sigiriya, you'll see it right from your cabana, our cabana was really good and confortable, we really enjoy it. The curry was great and not so spicy, the owner gave us many usefull infos about the area, overall really suggested specially for whom love to try somethink different, as we did.

If we d be back?

We booked this tree house by accident. We were so shocked or surprised the most we arrived at the entrance: wooded gate, all covered with trees inside.
Bad side: It was a little dis-appointment after checking in: really not that good infrastructure. It was tidy and clean, but very small room and need to shower outside…… if you are that kind of hotel person, this is not your choice.
Good side: it was really fantastic experience to climb the stairs and stay in a tree house  We can see the sigiria rock from our house. Very nice sunset and sunrise.
Special things to need to mention: the owner was very nice. That kind of perfect man to run a business like hotel or restaurant or shop. Dinner was fantastic, although you can only choose curry rice or noodle. They only served dinner at 7pm. Be patient for the fantastic curry rice with Chicken. It worth your time.

My partner and I stayed at thick forest during July, and had a wonderful experience. Having been in Sri Lanka for nearly a month, I was slightly disappointed with the lack of 'natural' accomodation available - in Thailand and Indonesia there are lots of wooden style treehouse chalets/bungalows but there seemed to be less of these in Sri Lanka. So when we arrived at thick forest, they had the treehouse type accomodation I had been looking for, we were very happy.
Our stay was very enjoyable. The chalets are set deep in the forest, which is very pleasant considering Sigiriya is very hot and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and the owner went out of his way to make sure we had a wonderful time.
It is some distance from town, and it is not advisable to walk around by yourself outside the grounds of the thick forest area, as elephants run wild. However, transport is easily available, and for us we liked the retreat of being in nature.
The food is absolutely fantastic and some of the best we had in Sri Lanka. The lovely lady who cooks is the wife of the tuk tuk driver, and her food is truley spectacular, and some of the more traditional type sri lankan I had while I was there instead of normal hotel food. It's well worth doing the half board deal and having your meals included.
The verandah of the restaurant has a lovely view of the rock and the shower facilties were very good for treehouse type accomodation.
The only criticism I would have to add was I think the prices are a little overpriced- I think we paid $80 a night for a bungalow that was incredibly lovely but also basic (no aircon etc or other things that one would expect in a mid-range accommodation place). I am usually not fussy about these kind of moden convieniences and I actually prefer fans to a/c but I have been used to paying less in Thailand and Indonesia.
However, keep in mind that we were here in peak season, and also Sri Lanka seems to be going through an odd adjustment period to the influx of tourism where prices for accomodation are much higher than in Thailand or Indonesia. Sigiriya also seems to lack really great accomodation and from what I saw in this price range- Thick Forest was definately the best. We stopped at the Sigiriya Rest House (highly praised in Lonely Planet) and it was not anywhere near as beautiful as Thick Forest.
So overall, I would say definately try and book Thick Forest as a lovely experience of Sri Lanka as it was one of the highlights of our trip and we loved the experience.
