“Massive rooms in a lovely setting.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 25, 2014

This hotel complex is located down a dirt road away from the local settlement. There is a separate reception building, an open ended bar/ restaurant and Ayurveda massage. The rooms are individual square blocks along tree- lined paths. There is a wonderful view of Lion Rock from here which is particularly good early evening as the light catches it.
Rooms are massive with a very wide bed, lots of storage, desk etc. the rooms have air con and a rotating fan. The bathroom is similarly large with the shower open to the sky (there is a net over to stop insects getting in); nice way to get a shower. Everything was very neat and clean.
The spa has Ayurveda massages and worth treating yourself at; I was served ginger tea whilst waiting. It's very strong so make sure you add some jaggry (Palm sugar).
The food is very good, evening meals are buffet style like many Sri Lankan accommodations. A number of starters including one evening the famous hoppers (a bowl shaped pancake really). Both nights we stayed there were a big variety of meat and vegetable curry dishes which were delicious. I don't normally go for the puddings but have to mention the sago (brings back childhood memories) and Omali pudding - their version of bread and butter. Delicious the lot of it.
There is a decent sized swimming pool with the view to Lion Rock.
Staff are very friendly and helpful. Don't be put of by it being down a track; I had a pleasant walk and saw lots of local life.
We would definitely recommend Kassapa Lion Rock as a place to stay.

I would highly recommend this resort if you are planning to visit the magnificent Sigiriya. Sigiriya is an absolute must do in Sri Lanka (or indeed, in the world), but it involves a lot of walking and climbing and may well leave you quite tired. This is where Lion's Rock comes in. The setting is absolutely lovely and peaceful, with a gorgeous view of the surrounding countryside. There is a great pool area with sun loungers and well-manicured grounds with an "African safari" feel. The spa is well priced and a tranquil way to ease your tired muscles. The food is a buffet which I was initially hesitant about but it is DELICIOUS. And the fact that breakfast and dinner is included makes it incredibly good value. We had lunch there one day (a la carte) and the food was delicious and very well-priced. The staff are lovely and attentive and I could not fault them. I would recommend this resort to anyone - very good value and lovely setting!

Room Tip: The rooms on the Eastern side near the pool seem a bit quieter and more peaceful

The only downside is once you are on site there isn't much you can do without transport, if you are including Sigiriya ( and you should) on a tour of Sri Lanka then the hotel offers a great basecamp. The rooms are separate cabins scattered across a well kept grassy park. A central restaurant offers bar and buffet food (good selection) with a nearby good sized pool to relax in or around.

We travelled down a small unsealed road for a shirt distance to this hotel, felt like we were out in the bush. Reception staff met us with a cold drink and scented hand towel, the rooms were separate cottages, we enjoyed sitting on the porch watching the peacocks and squirrels. Pool large and clean, pool boy so keen to give you a towel, he rushed up before we had time to sit down. The buffet dinner at night was delicious, from memory approx $10aud, also adequate breakfast. On our last night we were thrilled to,see on our bed "written" In leaves/flowers the words HAPPYJOURNEY . I would recommend d this hotel.

Room Tip: All rooms seem to be similar!!

We really love the quiet and calm environment, the friendly service, comfortable rooms. The food was good, however need to improve on the spread especially the Dinner and breakfast. The Sunday lunch buffet was wonderful. We checked in on 12th July 2014 and on the following day we had a very bad experience with the supply of water services to the rooms, and had to call every body in the hotel to attend to it. We had a terrible time without water for more than one hour in the morning from 7 a.m to 8 a.m. We were given lot of excuses for same which are not justifiable. Continues supply of water is an essential requirement for guests, especially in the morning. The management should look into this very seriously to avoid such situations in time to come. Apart from above mentioned issue everything else were fine.

Room Tip: Every where the environment is peaceful and calm.

I had a wonderful stay in July and found the 'hotel' very charming indeed.

Loved the setting and the feel of the place. The staff were fantastic which to me is really important.

Upon arrival we were greeted with a smile and given bulath (or Belet leaf) which I found out is a traditional way to welcome someone in Sinhalese culture.

We were asked to take a seat and offered a cool drink (which tasted delicious) and cold towel which was much appreciated with it being so hot outside!

Once the room key was ready we were taken over to a tall standing 'polthel pahana' (coconut oil lamp) in the reception area and given a candle to light one of the burners (a local custom - the light is said to bring good luck).

Our bags were then immediately taken to our room and we were shown the way.

The rooms are like little chalets - basic but all that you need. I loved how private it felt, like it was your own little place.

Note: There are occasionally 'visitors' to the bathroom but what do you expect when you're living in the jungle? Personally this wasn't a big deal for me as I spent my first few days in SL showering outdoors. My small lizard friend did me no harm and kept himself to himself. I loved how the roof above the shower let's in the sunlight and sound of the birds in the morning. A great way to start the day.

LOCATION: The hotel is in a secluded area with a view of Sigiriya rock from the pool. There is wildlife wandering around the grounds such as peacocks and it has a very naturistic feel to it.

THE ROOM: bed, tea station, table & chairs, fridge, TV (not modern and a bit fuzzy but who goes to a hotel to watch telly?), dressing table. AC worked well. Few tears in linen but was clean and towels were replaced daily as well as 2 x complimentary water bottles.

THE FOOD: Good variety of Asian and Western dishes in the a le carte menu as well as the buffet. I tried both the traditional Sri Lankan cuisine and 'my own food' (I'm from the UK) and thoroughly enjoyed. I loved the 'live cooking' section where I could see how traditional dishes were made (kottu rotty and hoppers)

THE STAFF/SERVICE: Thanks to Jalaka, Lakshika and Dalush in the restaurant. The guys working here are great - friendly and genuine. They approached us and asked how our day was / where we'd been. On our second night I asked for 'that drink I had last night' and he remembered straight away. They gave us tips and advice on the local area and for the rest of our trip around Sri Lanka; They weren't just doing it because 'it's their job' but did it in the way a good friend would. Room service was also prompt and precise.

Overall we had a fantastic experience and I was sad to leave. I would not hesitate to stay here again or recommend to a friend.

We really loved it here! Has a nice laid back feel, the separate cottages had good breeze-ways, open up the shuttered window one side and the window opposite and the room was soon aired without the need for AC (although provided). Being two women travelling, we loved the generous bathroom (with bath) and also great to have a lIttle sitting area to dump bags as well as a porch with a couple of comfy chairs, although we spent most of our down time around the pool area which, while not as flash as some travellers might like, was clean, good size and the attendant was immediately on to it with towels and sunlounger cushions. The cost included breakfast and dinner - both were buffet which can be a little concerning. But not here! Food was excellent - we are fans of the humbly named "curry and rice" and were perfectly satisfied with what came out of the kitchen. During our short stay there were a number of families with young children and I'm not surprised. It is an ideal place for children and don't let this put you off if you are travelling sans-kids. The separate bungalows make it very quiet at night and it was lovely to hear the children splashing & having fun in the pool during the day. Staff were terrific - thank you for making our stay so enjoyable. We will return here.
