We stayed there in low season and there where just a few other guests. It is a very nice hotel with good taste in interior design. Big rooms with verything you want, nice bathroom with huge shower, minibar to have some cool drinks and a nice view.
The staff is very helpful
We got a bike at the hotel for about 500 rupee a day/24h. Our bikes were very decent and a lot of other tourist asked where we did rent them, the other rental bike shop rent out less good ones.
There is a nice garden where we could have our breakfast. The location is okay if you have a bike of if you go by tuktuk. It is about 10minutes bu bike to the citycenter and about 10-15minutes tonthe ruins.
Nice city to visit and very comfotable hotel.

As the hotel is too close to the ruins of the Polonnaruwa ancient city and the reservoir, Parakrama Samudraya, we felt very comfortable for traveling and visiting them. Especially my kids and me really enjoyed the hotel garden, walking on the grass with dew in the morning. My husband also agreed that the hotel is well maintained. We enjoyed the food well for the all 3 meals. The hotel staff was also good with great caring of us, as they kept calling us, till we've arrived to the hotel. Thanks Ruins Chayaa, for your great serving!

We arrived at the hotel fairly late, but the hotel were expecting us and booking in was straight forward. Our room was comfortable and well appointed, especially as the cost of the hotel per night was very reasonable.
The hotel was very quiet as it was immediatley before Sri Lankan new year, and a number of items were unavailable on the menu, but there was still choice and what we had was well cooked and presented. The kitchens can be seen from the dining area through a large glass viewing window, and the kitchens were well staffed, clean and looked to be well appointed.
I had requested that the hotel arrange a car to take us on to Kandy the following day (arranged in advance by email) and this took place without a hitch. Would recommend this hotel to people visiting the area and also to pay a visit to Gal Vihara, which is near by, and the main reason we booked.

The hotel did one thing right: It chose the correct name for its establishment: Ruin.
That’s exactly what this disgusting hotel is. Don’t ruin your vacation staying at this place!

Check-In:
The staff is extremely unwelcoming, hostile and unfriendly. We had the feeling that we disturbed them at doing nothing. They claimed that we didn’t have a reservation, only after checking on a list, the guy found out that indeed we reserved a room. Reluctantly, he did the paperwork and handed us a room key.

Room:
When opening the door, there was an extremely unpleasant smell in the room and bathroom. Everything looks shabby and worn-down. The room has cracks in the wall and seemed to be in very bad condition. The bathroom was dirty and mould and mildew was in each corner of the bathroom. We didn’t want to touch anything to not get any serious infection.
Also, there was a wedding ongoing and it was very noisy, one person ‘singing’ the entire night. Also the A/C is terribly loud, even on lowest setting. So there is no sleep, either because of noise or because of high temperatures.

Breakfast:
One word: gross. Everything looked as if had been already eaten. The selection is bad and the taste is even worse. We tried two bites of the daal and didn’t want to continue to avoid food poisoning. Also, the service is abysmal: We were reluctantly offered coffee or tea once, never a single refill. The restaurant is dirty: The waiters push crumbs and litter to the floor and leave it there.

Check-Out:
The person checking us out did barely speak English, she couldn’t understand my complaints. She again wanted money from us although the invoice has already been paid to Expedia.

Never again, please don’t ruin your vacation with staying here. Choose a different hotel in Polonnaruwa or in a village close-by.

It is not 4 stars it is maximum 1
I can only say that our stay was anything but pleasant:
1. Totally unfriendly staff: we arrived and wanted to check-in but we were told that is not possible, the hotel is full. After looking on their list, they finally found our reservation
2. Noisiest hotel ever: you can hear the neighbors and the worst was the noise coming from outside until 4am. Someone singing or speaking in a speaker. I come to a hotel to sleep, if I cannot sleep because of the noise, the hotel didn’t fulfill its part of the contract !
3. The WiFi is not working properly because they didn’t invest in repeaters
4. Breakfast ? Almost non existing since you have cabbage, tomato, boiled eggs, french toast, soup, bread, 3 fruits. You would get more choice in a home stay ! Also the table was not clean and it is not a surprise when you see how the waiters are cleaning the tables of guests who are finished
