After being underwhelmed by other items in this large World Heritage site, the four Buddha sculptures more than compensated my previous disappointment. They represent different elements of Buddhist teaching and are incredibly well preserved and beautiful.

Gal Vihara (rock monastery) was built during the reign of King Parakramabahu I, in the 12th century and it is part of the Polonnaruwa ruins complex. The main feature of the temple is the four beautifully crafted statues of Buddha, carved into the face of one single granite rock. There is a large seated figure, a smaller seated figure inside an artificial cavern, a standing figure and a reclining figure. The carvings are considered to be the best examples of ancient Sinhalese carving, are quite popular with the locals and very much worth a visit.

Stayed at sigiriya so for the driver to take us here was about 1 hour drive. I think cost is about 20 usd each approx usual high tourist rate. My tip is to rent a bike at the entrance area I paid approx £2 for each bike. It’s a far distance do bike is easier and more fun as most of it is flat.

Gal Vihara is located deep inside the Polonnaruwa Archaeological Ruins and is the most important site in the area. The site mainly contains large monolith statues of Buddha in sitting, standing and reclining position. The passage to the site is very beautiful, lined by Lake, which has plenty of turtles. The photography of the Buddha statues is allowed, but without anyone else in the frame and if positing for a photo with the idol, back of the person should not be towards the idol.
