The whole region within the cultural triangle had a huge amount of history.
You must not miss this area within your tour, very significant. The museum is small but all makes sense if you do this first then see the old city and sights

What an amazing, spiritual place, go early as it gets mobbed. Climb the rock at the base of the Buddha and you can get making pictures.

This has 4 statues carved from rock. They are very complete and well preserved. Their scale is underwhelming. Lots of monkeys on the walk there- two different kinds.

After doing the cave temples in Dambulla these felt less impressive.

Be sure to keep shoulders covered, shoes off and hats off or the guards will shout at you.

You get into Gal Vihara with your ticket to all of the Polonnaruwa. The buddhas are carved into live stone - there is a standing, sitting and lying one. Its a nice site to visit while you are there.
