“Great for Visiting Polonnaruwa”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

My partner and I stayed here for one night to visit the Polonnaruwa ruins. We were given a very warm welcome and offered a drink on arrival. The room was basic but clean, comfortable, tidy and good value. Although it had no TV, we weren’t there long enough to use one.

We paid around around 700 rupees each for dinner and were not disappointed. This was great value for money and was tailored to our tastes after we asked for it to be not too spicy. The breakfast was also excellent, traditional Sri Lankan food and amongst the best breakfast we had there.

The guest house was set in beautiful surroundings, and literally a stone’s throw from the ruins. This is an excellent base to visit them but would advise getting a tuk-tuk to travel around as they are vast. The owner even helped to negotiate a good price for us.

Ok, we stayed at the Clay Huts after the reviews and were severely disappointed.
The rooms need painting and cleaning, tiles in the bathroom were a mis match of dirty colours and the place needs repair,
I admit the owner can cook but constantly watched every mouthful pushing us to eat more and more.
To finish my review, our son was not well the next morning so we decided to move on to Kandy and not stay the 2nd night as its in the middle of nowhere and the owner charged us full price plus excessive extras on bottled water etc, we felt totally ripped off!
I would not recommend this place to anyone!

This is really a village, located in a village -- polonnaruwa.
Everything is very good.
The family room is nice and with air conditioned. It is also a budget choice.
The host is very nice and so as his wife. He is a former Police Officer and you will feel very secure.
His wife prepare the very traditional Sri Lankan food to us for FREE!
We also had a great talk that night. They also cooked us the best Sri Lankan breakfast too!
They provide us with bicycle for traveling around the ruin.

Everything is good.
Just one thing: if his neighbor invite you for the elephant safari, think twice. Because the safari is not in Minneriya National Park, it is in a small Ecopark which you got a remote chance to see the elephant during a short safari.
But this issue is nothing to do with ClayHut village. So, they worth an Excellence in all the aspect!

It's hard not to rave about this place. Tucked away near some of the major ruins it offers a simple, peaceful place to base yourself. Rooms are simply furnished and very suitable to the low to mid range traveller.
However, as is mentioned often, the food is terrific. The hostess goes to such lengths to prepare authentic traditional Sri Lankan food with an account of its ingredients and cooking process. Our kids, age 7 & 10 are timid about spicy food and every effort was made to accommodate them. We had the good fortune to be there over SL new year and thus were provided with special dishes reserved for this occasion. Having travelled extensively through Asia, I believe that this is some of the best food I have ever eaten.
The final bill was very reasonable for the feasting we had done.
New year was logistically tricky, arranging transport etc, yet the owner enthusiastically sought out neighbours to assist.such a cheerful, friendly place.
Don't believe the rickshaw drivers if they tell you it's no good, I suspect they don't pay a commission.

We stayed here and liked the couple who run it and the good food served.
The breakfast was magnificent and the only place where they automatically served a Sri Lankan breakfast without making it clear it is harder work, the lady of the house was proud to share her traditions and that was charming
The garden has lots of lovely birds

This is a relatively new place run by recently retired Sri Lankan couple who are extremely friendly and helpful. It is located very close to the ancient city and set in peaceful nice grounds with a very large pond. The rooms are large and clean. The food was a real feast of traditional Sri Lankan food. I would recommend it as a good base to explore the city and surrounds.
