The mixed reviews are based on there being several different types of rooms. Downstairs are the budget rooms, quite basic, but looked reasonably comfortable. Upstairs are the nicer, newer rooms with nice sunlight, newer bathroom, and still a great value.

I was happy with the stay here, it was comfortable and a great location. Not too far from the ruins, we rented bikes next door at the fruit shop to explore the ruins. Great stay, would highly recommend.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms are much better and cleaner.

For starters, the pics listed on this website are NOT representative of the actual premises. I don't believe the main building they have pictured even exists on the property. The staff was friendly but the room was unacceptable...mainly the bathroom. The room was dirty, the sheets dingy, tons of bugs, and a terribly uncomfortable mattress complete with pillows that felt like rocks. Our bathroom was continually flooded leaving a 1" puddle across the entire bathroom floor for hundreds (and I'm not kidding) of bugs to die in. We had to ask for towels, toilet paper, and a squeegee for the floor. The towels were not fresh, were paper thin and looked as if they should have been retired to rags years ago. The stopper was missing from the sink which made laundry impossible. The food was below average and expensive. Honestly, I'm about as easy going as one can be but I was really disappointed with this place and would not stay here again. The location was very good...close to the ruins... I guess if you don't mind gross bathrooms, the rest of it would have been tolerable at best.

Room Tip: Stay away from #5!!!!

We stayed here for one night before exploring polonnaruwa in the morning, and would definitely recommend it. Our room and bathroom (number 3) were lovely and clean, and the meals on the veranda were good. The best part about manel guest house is definitely the staff, they were very friendly and helpful while we were there. We hired bikes from them for 300 rupees to explore the ruins, which is definitely the best way to do it!
Special thank you to Layan for the mini flute concert and lesson! If anyone is considering visiting polonnaruwa over Christmas, Layan and his friends will be hosting a classical music concert at manel guest house with BBQ and buffet from 25-31 December, which (judging by our little concert) would be worth going to.

Room Tip: Room 3 has amazing bathroom facilities, probably the best we have seen for this price in Sri Lanka.

Manel Guest house is located in the New Town Road very close to the old town of Polonnaruwa.

Behind the guest house a large paddy field and beyond that you find the famous ancient tank 'Parakrama Samudraya'. Soothing always continue to flow from that side towards the guest house.

The guest house itself if pretty basic. But what I find most attractive is the location. This is located within walking distance to the Parakrama Samudraya and the ancient ruins (archaeological sites). Even closer is the tourist police station, the old town, communication centers, bicycle hiring shop, fuel station etc. Kaduruwela town which is a larger town (which can cater for almost all your shopping, dining needs) is about four kilometers away from here. But this does not mean the guest house is disturbed. The place where the guest house is located is generally peaceful.

The staff at the guest house are helpful and flexible. We tried only some basic Sri Lanka food, and they were well prepared and tasty. I have seen other guest enjoying candle/lamp lit dining in the garden of the guest house, close to the paddy field, and they all seemed to enjoy it. The guest house also offers Wi-Fi facility.

Our group consisted two families (including children) and we were generally satisfied with the facilities. In fact this is my second visit to Manel GH. I stayed there about 3 years also. I can recommend this to travelers who need a basic, convenient and budget place to stay - but don't expect all the fancy facilities or services.

Room Tip: The upstairs rooms give a better view of the paddy field and towards the tank. But watch out for the...

We stayed in one of the rooms upstairs and paid Rs 3000 for a double room. I was surprised at the room we got. It was very clean with an AC and a very clean toilet. It is also not far from the Museum. In the evening the breeze outside was outstanding. Also very friendly owner. she allowed us to keep our backpacks in her office after checking out so we can travel around the ruins with less weight.
