“A Must visit with kids !!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2014

About an hour and a half hours drive from Kandy, this place is a must see if you are with kids. Here you can see elephants bathing in the river. You can also feed milk to baby elephants ( at an extra cost). Here you get to see countless elephants of all ages and you can take snaps with the loving animals.

“Good experience”

A very good watch for children with various activities conducted at the orphanage. Pl avoid tipping any of the staff as they may ask you post taking a pic with the elephants.

“Best experience of our holiday”

A very large Elephant Orphanage and education centre. Watching the elephants bath in the river was magical, we spent hours watching them play and being washed bby their mahoods and each other.

“Not nice!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 9, 2014

Mmmm...this place should change the name from orphanage to business, because this is what it is! I'm concern about one particular elephant which was chained near the river and on order of his carer had to go to the river and pretend that he enjoyed the bath. He was distressed to begin with, was rocking from side to side beforehand bath ordeal. Little man with mustache, chewing betel nut force him with iron rod to the water. When the other elephants came to the river he was allowed to stand in a water but could not leave. He was visable skinner then the others. If this is an orphanage why elephants are produced there in mass. More elephants more food is required and tickets from 500 raised to 2500. Who is profiteering from this orphanage?

“DO NOT GO HERE....”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 9, 2014

The elephants are chained, distressed and wince when they are shown a stick. They have anxiety issues and some have marks from the chains. They rub their leg when in the water which looked as though they were dressing a wound. The older elephants are washed and if another unchained elephant comes too close the keepers go at them with knives. If you say you would like to touch the elephant they stick a sharp hook in its ear and it is forced to go where the keeper wants it to.

This place reduced me to tears, it was horrible and I would not recommend anyone spends any money visiting this torture chamber.

There is a game reserve about an hour further up the main road and it is home to hundreds of wild elephant. For a little more money (and it is a little) you can get up close to them in the wild and see them playing, washing, eating and behaving how they should behave this is a far better experience.
