This place is closer to a zoo or Disney land than any thing else. First it is a rip off and 2nd this place clearly lost it s initial purpose. We saw elephants in such places in few parts of Asia and this was the worth of all. Now we were warned as the guidebooks said it but we wanted to try , after all we also went to Disney land ... ( apparently the millennium park a few km befor is much better). That said too see elephants the natural reserves are much better.

At an hours drive it is a good place to spend first half of the day. Elephant bathing seen is interested. They offer 50% discount to Saarc countries tourists which we availed. You can spend time with elephants of almost all ages. Milk feeding is also an interesting activity. Overall a good attraction around Kandy. It is also approachable from Colombo.

Stayed two nights at the Elephant Bay Hotel. Interesting experience in itself, but great for elephant watching. We didn't have to pay to see the elephants bathe, as we had a hotel reservation, didn't go into the 'zoo'. Saw elephants from 9am - 4pm every day in the river. Must say, they looked happy, well fed and not mid-treated at all. Would recommend this visit.

Visiting Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was a hilite in our trip to Sri Lanka. We were on our way to Kandy and we made a quick stop at Pinnawala, arriving there at the exact moment when the elephants were taken to the river for their morning bath. It was for sure a lot of fun! I've never seen so many elephants at the same time. All ages, all sizes! Playing among themselves in the water and apparently enjoying it! All injured or orphan baby elephants rescued in the different regions of Sri Lanka are taken to Pinnawala, where they are fed and watched over. The newcomers are in quarentine until they can join the whole group. It is fun and, at the same time, you are helping them taking care of the orphans, injured and elder ones. Pinnawala is famous for having the largest herd of captives Asian elephants in the whole world. Don't miss it, or you may regret forever. Enjoy!

We visited expecting an orphanage but found this more like a zoo. There seemed no attempt at conservation and they are breeding animals. Many elephants were chained up and looked miserable. When questioned the staff told us these were dangerous. Highly recommend giving it a miss and going on a safari to see them in the wild instead.
