We stayed at the Chaaya Citadel for two nights as part of a tour of Sri Lanka. I feel mystified by the poor reviews about this hotel. We found it relaxing, excellent service, a huge choice of food, lovely, clean rooms and extremely pleasant, helpful staff. The setting is so beautiful, right on the river bank. The swimming pool area is lovely, plenty of loungers, the bar area very laid back and comfortable, I can't think of a single complaint!! Our visit to the elephant orphange was unforgettable, the sight of 50+ elephants in the most beautiful river landscape was breathtaking! The experience of the Kandyan Temple Dancers and the Temple was very moving. Sri Lanka was a fantastic holiday for us, completely unforgettable, safe, welcoming and very friendly.

This hotel is a short drive from Kandy so we were half board. The room was clean and tidy and had a good view over the gardens and river. The buffet breakfast was a good mix of Asian & Western foods. We had a pleasant stay.

We were on a Kuoni Ceylon Tour and stayed at this hotel for two nights. The room was spacious with access to the garden and wonderful views of the river and lush jungle beyond. I did not like the black tiled bathroom but it was all newly fitted and everything worked well - but rather dark when in the shower. The large buffet style restaurant had quite a low ceiling and the noise levels were very high. Food quite good. Wine expensive so did not bother with it. We were a group of ten but there were some very large groups who were obviously enjoying themselves a great deal and were very noisy. The pool snack bar was excellent with waiter service. We enjoyed our stay and have no hesitation in recommending this hotel. We also stayed at Chaaya Village which was absolutely excellent.

We stayed one night to see Kandy and enjoyed our time at the hotel. It's nothing super special but it's away from the hub-bub and it works. The staff were all friendly and helpful and the location by the riverside is breathtaking. The pool was great and uncrowded and we enjoyed a lunchtime snack in the bar where the food options were good.

The rooms were fine if a little worn - the bathrooms particualrly looked tired. There's no in-room internet - you need to use the PC at reception for a charge. The restaurant staff occasionally were brusque and the service was not very slick but the food choices were great and tasty at both dinner and breakfast (although the coffee was bitter, stewed and quite unpleasant).

All in all, a good stay for us.

The hotel is located on the banks of the Mahavelli river with dense forest on the other side. The location of this hotel is mind blowing, each of its room irrespective of the categories are facing the river. The lobby and the restaurant are decent, food is excellent. The staff at the hotel are pleasant and welcoming.

For a four star rating the hotel gives back every penny for the buck.
