“The best hotel in its class in Kandy...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2014

This was my first time to the 'Citadel' after it became part of the Cinnamon fold.

Having stayed in almost all the hotels of its class in Kandy, can say without hesitation that it is the best of its kind in Kandy - by far.

The food was great - though the variety was limited as compared to the Cinnamon Bey, Lakeside and Grand. The rooms were lovely - though once again, in comparison, they was more to be expected. Loved the view from our room (the last in the hallway - 324 and 325 - which was coupled to make a suite) The service was excellent - which to me made a world of a difference !

All told, it truly was a superb holiday. Kudos to the GM and the Staff who went out of their way to make our stay truly memorable.

The only reason for a 4 rating was the comparison to other Cinnamon hotels - but if it is to be compared to others in Kandy, then, I would not hesitate to give it a 5 !

Room Tip: Choose a room right at the corner if you want privacy. Note that there are no dedicated 'suites...

We thought this not quite as good as the Cinnamon Lodge at Habarana even though we had better weather here. It is still a good choice in the area with good-sized deluxe rooms, attractive and well-maintained ground and views cross the river. It is, however, well out of Kandy necessitating taxi, tuk-tuk or your driver to take you into the city. The plus is that it is peaceful though the rather strange open venting of the bathrooms on to the corridor and open widows from there to the road/car park do make for some noise issues.

Checking in went smoothly with little delay. Then we set off along the long, rather bleak, concrete corridors to our room. Deluxe rooms are rather distant from the bar/dining area. The room was good, spacious and with the usual accoutrements. The decor perhaps a little dated but quite acceptable. A balcony with chairs and table also allowed a pleasant view across to the river and gives a pleasant impression of being close to nature. The hotel offers a reasonably priced trip on a small boat (safety well catered for with life jackets), especially if more than one couple taking it; nothing too exciting but herons, kingfishers and an eagle or two to be seen.

The buffet meals, dinner and breakfast were good but short of being very good. There was a noticeably smaller choice than at at Cinnamon Lodge and the feeling when accessing food and moving about was more crowded. Do check festivals, we were there on Full Moon Poya Day and no alcohol is served, not in the bar nor in the restaurant though room service and minibar are ok. This is not, however, peculiar to this hotel and staff were very pleasant in explaining the situation.

Room Tip: If you don't mind a little walk the deluxe rooms do have good views.

The Cinnamon Citadel was used as a base for 2 days of exploring around the Kandy area, and I wish I'd been able to enjoy the hotel grounds and pool.

The rooms were incredibly comfortable and spacious, the dining room had a great atmosphere and the service was exceptional.

As we were leaving the hotel early in the morning, breakfast boxes were requested and supplied, with drinks, pastries and fresh fruit.

This hotel is situated overlooking the river. It is a very pleasant location and the lounge is very bright and clean, and the service was very good. The restaurant, which you can sit inside or out on the terrace has a variety of food and there is something to suit everyone.

A solid safe and reasonable hotel, set on the side of a hill overlooking a delightful river scene. Good restaurant, nice bar, good pool and nice gardens. Not the most memorable hotel and a bit tired in places but the staff are excellent throughout the hotel. We had a room that opened on to a balcony and the gardens that was lovely. The room was a good walk from the amenities with lots of steps but hey, it is on a hill. The hotel is not in the middle of town but that is not a show stopper as the up side is the views and the peace and quiet.

We stayed in kandy for one night, wish it was more. The room we has was huge, and very private with a view of the lush green garden. The bar by the pool near the lobby was great atmosphere and was nice for catching up with friends. The breakfast buffet was fantastic such a large variety. Overall wish we stayed longer and will be back again.

Spent three nights here during our honeymoon December 2013. Staff very friendly and polite, and the room was gorgeous. We were given complimentary upgrade and fruit bowl for our honeymoon, which was a lovely touch. The room was the cleanest we stayed in on our trip, and was very fresh and stylish. The bed was enormous and decorated every evening with petals and our balcony had a great view of the river. The bar area was very nice, overlooking the pool and the river, and the staff were attentive- giving out Bombay mix with your drinks!

The food was delicious, particularly breakfast with a huge selection of cooked/continental/fruits etc. The curries in the evening were also great, although I noticed inconsistencies with the heat- some evenings nothing had any spice, then the next they made up for it! Curries(which were mostly vegetarian) were by far the best food choice, although other options included pasta, fish and beef lasagne. Only one issue- I have severe allergy to strawberries, and yet most of the desserts either contained them or were garnished with them, despite the hotel having knowledge of this allergy before hand.

Overall I would definitely recommend, and would live to go back myself!

Room Tip: Ask for something on the second floor as it has good views and is away from the noise of the restaur...
