“Rooms with a view”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 27, 2012

We stayed at this hotel for two nights as part of a tour of Sri Lanka organised by Kuoni. The hotel is in a beautiful setting with most rooms overlooking the gardens and the river. Reception was efficient booking us in and dealing with bags - look out for the amazing costume worn by the doorman, well worth a photograph.
We were in room 254 in the middle tier and had a great view from our balcony. The balcony was big enough for three people to comfortably sit out with each terrace of rooms cleverly designed to be not overlooked by the higher rooms. The room decor is simple and some might find the dark tiles in the bathrooms dated. The room was clean and room service was good with beds turned down, fresh sheets and towels each day and the tea coffee and water replenished.
Whilst our stay here was comfortable there were signs that the hotel could do with some refurbishment. Our air conditioning was poor, it just didn't pump out much cool air, we also had two cockroaches in the shower tray - one I disposed of in the garden and the other disappeared from where it came.
Some rooms do get a bit of noise from the open bar area but we did not find this intrusive and things generally finished by 11pm.
The bar area is comfortably furnished and there is a range of local and branded drinks available. We were all inclusive so dont know if the prices were reasonable or not. The service can be slow but we found this to be the same at the other hotels we stayed in on our tour.
There was a good variety of dishes available in the self service restaurant, generally a mix of Sri Lankan and European dishes with occasional international alternatives thrown in. However, you have to like curry if you visit Sri Lanka!

Room Tip: For quiet rooms get one away from the main hotel area.

Beautiful property right at the riverbanks.
The rooms were huge and tastefully done. Ours had an open sitout just on the banks of the river. Lot of insects though and we actually even saw a snake outside the room.
The food was nice but the service was super slow.
The pool was great. I would want to come back for the resort, Kandy in itself is not really worth mentioning...Hikkaduwa was much better.

We stayed at the Chaaya Citadel for 2 nights on the 16th & 17th of Feb. It was a great experience! Firstly the location is superb - right next to the river. Try and see if you can get a ground floor room in the wing furthest away from the main area, its closest to the river. Secondly, the room we got was in tip-top condition. We were apprehensive as we had read that some rooms looked tired but we had no complaints. Thirdly, the service was fantastic right from the checkin to checkout. Though the hotel appears to cater primarily for tour groups, they paid great attention to our needs as well. For example, when we arrived there was a tour group being checked in but they kindly expedited our checkin so we didn't have to wait for the whole group to get checked in. Then later in the stay, we asked for a special celebratory dinner and the head chef talked us personally through the menu to ensure it would be ok by us. And the service provided by the Food & Bev manager (I forget his name) was perfect as well - he was helpful and thoughtful - letting us know the ingredients in each dish (my wife is allergic to a number of things). Overall everyone ensured we had a great short break in Kandy. Frankly, we also stayed at the Cinnamon Lakeside in Colombo but wished we had spent more time in Kandy instead!

I believe the hotel is going to close for renovation in early May but hopefully it will not lose its charm after the refurbishment.

Room Tip: Ask for a room by the riverside in the wing furthest away from the main lobby

Winding roads of Kandy made me wonder what the hotel would be like but when we arrived there we were very cordially attended by every one and the spacious room with excellent bathroom and a beautiful view of the wide river from the back balcony made me think that we should have stayed there for a few more days. The bar area is superb and so is the dining area with a very good view of the river mentioned before. Food was very good but the meat, chicken and fish were a bit chewy. Brakefast was very good with very quick service.

Room Tip: Choose a superior room with a balcony.

We were at this hotel for two nights. The hotel is outdated and not particularly tasty food. Rooms are clean and nice staff.

Room Tip: If however you are here ask for a room with river views

We stayed here for one night whilst on a Kuoni excursion to Kandy and surrounding area. Bedroom was very comfortable with a good sized bathroom with all the usual toiletries and a very pleasant view over the river. Both breakfast and dinner were very good with a varied selection of food, with some excellent curries for dinner. The bar is well staffed and the evening we were there, they had a couple singing who were excellent.

All in all, a very.pleasant stay and would have no hesitation recommending it to other travellers.
