Cinnamon Citadel Kandy
Ranked #5 of 56 Hotels in Kandy
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 27, 2011

I have recently come back from a lovely honeymoon to Sri Lanka The Chaaya Citadel was the Hotel we choose to explore Kandy and the Sites in the Central area of Sri Lanka. The Hotel is away from Central Kandy but that was no problem at all to us as we liked the peaceful location away from the busy town. If you are not booked on a tour you will need a taxi driver to get to Kandy. We used the taxi driver , Samantha Priyankara, who was employed by our travel agents to do our ransfer from the airport. He was a lovely man, very knowledgeable, polite and friendly. He took us to the main Sites at a reduced cost. He can be contacted on samantha perga709@gmail.com and 0773741814.

From the previous reviews I thought the Chaaya Citadel would be the poorest choice of our 3 Hotels. Others have reviewed it as simply a place for coach parties to stop off at. It is true that it does cater for large parties. However the staff manage this very well. As a honeymoon couple we felt very welcome by all the staff.

The Chhaya Citadel is set in a beatiful location on the banks of a large river overlooking the tropical rainforest. The pictures on line and in brochures do not do it justice. There is a lovely clean swimming pool where you can swim with views of the jungle.

The staff are incredibly friendly. I said to my husband that it is not possible to be in a bad mood here as the staff are so friendly. Nothing was too much trouble.

The restaurant manages to cater for large parties and couple very well. There is an immense choice of food. We were seated away from the groups. The food is both Sri Lankan and European buffet style. There is plenty of it and it is very well cooked, unlike another beach resort we stayed in where the food was very poor quality. We eat far too much as we loved the food so much.

Both the restaurant and the bar area overlook the river and forest. There are plenty of places to sit and relax in the bar area.

The only negative point I found about the Hotal was that our room was above the kitchens and laundry area. There was quite a lot of noise as the staff prepared for the day. However it was not sufficient for me to feel I needed to move rooms.

I would highly recommend the Chaaya Citadel as a base to explore Kandy

We stayed two nights as part of our visit to Sri Lanka and was expecting this hotel to be the poorest of the three hotels. However this was not the case and the food was excellant and the staff were helpful and friendly. Rooms were spacious and very clean and our teenagers enjoyed playing snooker and that this was free of charge! A very relaxing stopover after spending the day sightseeing.
We were on all inclusive - however in Sri Lanke this does not include diet soft drinks which I was unaware of until we arrived

I have never enjoyed my stay in Kandy before like I did at Chaaya Citadel. The staff is EXCELLENT. They are very friendly and always ready to help you in anyway. They are fast and responsive as well.

The food is mindblowing. We usually go to the town for meals but we didn't have to leave the hotel for any meals. In fact, every single item in their buffer is so delicious with perfect flavors, we couldn't resist trying them all!

The deluxe rooms are beautiful! It makes me feel right at home! The atmosphere is fresh and very open with so much green and the largest river of Sri Lanka right infront of you!

Lovely experience overall! I would definitely go there again!

Having stayed at other hotels in this group I was a bit disappointed by this hotel. There was a strange smell around the lobby and it was generally a bit dingy.
Breakfast was o.k. but a bit slap dash, not much choice, and not as good as any of the other hotels we stayed at. We had bar snacks which were o.k. but went into town rather than use the restaurant in the evening.
Not a bad hotel but I will try somewhere else next time I'm in the area.

Good hotel but very busy, We had a deluxe room which was very spacious and modern but it was quite a long walk from the main part of the hotel and there was a road behind where they parked the coaches which were noisy early morning. Meals were buffet style but there was a good choice - just a bit stressful queing for everything!
Very good location for site seeing.

Thank you for your comments on our resort. The location is perfect for sightseeing because it is located away from the busy town of Kandy but can be easily accessed. The resort is relatively busy during this season, making the restaurant crowded during meal times, however the spacious public areas and the green environs ensures privacy and relaxation.

We were on a Cultural Tour of Sri Lanka and stayed at this hotel for two nights (although not consecutive). This is a lovely hotel set on the banks of the river, within easy reach of Kandy. It has a lovely pool (very welcome after a long drive), the bar is very comfortable and the restaurant is lovely. A great choice of food at both breakfast and evening. The wine is pricey but it is in all hotels in Sri Lanka. Would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Kandy.

Room Tip: Great pool

Of the 6 'international' hotels we stayed at in Sri Lanka this was the least satisfying for me personally, though one of the more expensive
Cannot put my finger on it, we were even upgraded to a ;suite'.
The hotel itself as a building was good and well maintained and a nice position (though well outside Kandy) next to the river.
Maybe it was the staff who unlike everywhere else we stayed in Sri Lanka didn't seem to have a good attitude or disposition, maybe constant exposure to coachloads of foreigners had worn them down to be more cynical and world weary.
The restaurant was depressing, again the food and facilities were there but it was laid like a works canteen and the staff seemed stretched and were snappy and irratable. The large number of coach parties on long tables didn't help either.
I guess the place reminded me too much of hotel experiences in 4 star chains on the edge of cities back home. Probably why I didn't get this place. Take out the heat and river view and it could have been a chain hotel anywhere in the world with disinterested staff and nothing to endear you to the place.
