A very friendly hotel where the staff were so welcoming and friendly. When I arrived the hotel was overbooked and I was moved to the penthouse apartment-HUGE and a fabulous terrace looking a long way over the valley. A lovely couple of days. Good value for money

certainly worth the money you pay, exeptionally helpful staff, (i think it was the owner of the hotel). He would drive us where we wanted to go, even help us get pay as u go tel card.

it coulb be a bit cleaner, but one would not expect more for that money you pay.

Great view!

Room Tip: it is not in walking distance from Kandy center, but has a great view from the terrace!

Kandy View Hotel is a very nice, cozy and reliable. Perfect place to stay, especially if you travel alone or in small groups. Was really impressed by its hospitality: it is REALLY about its guests, I felt really safe and welcome in.
The view from the top floor is stunning.
Evenings manager cooks delicious diner for guests, and where are always interesting travelers to have nice chats with. They organize great excursions, walks & sightseeing for affordable prices!
Have absolutely enjoyed time at Kandy while staying there, will be glad to back again.

We were very happy with the level of services in this hotel - starting from manager and ending with receptionist. It's something you will not experience in Sri Lanka just like that.
I would definitely recommend and would come back to this hotel!

The hotel has great facilities, a good pool, fresh food which they will teach you how to make if you wish. The owner is a great guy and gave us much information about the surrounding area and was very honest about the price of things and gave us a great deal for a tour to Yala.

The hotel itself is very clean and presentable, but it is worth noting that the cheapest rooms are on the lower floors and aren't as nice as the upper floor ones. It is definitely worth staying in a slightly more expensive room.

The hotel is slightly far away from the town but it is not much to get a tuk tuk and it is very peaceful which is great.

This was our first trip to Sri Lanka and our first hotel. We thought Kandy would be the best place to start and based on Lonely Planet reviews we were swayed towards this affordable and quaint looking hotel. There are massive positives to staying here as well as huge negatives so I will be totally fair in outlining both.

Positive:

This hotel has amazing views. It's terrace is amazing, if basic, in terms of the views you have of Kandy, the hillside alongside. Sometimes we would hear the call to prayer which really a great soundtrack to the view. You can sometimes see monkeys in the the neighbouring trees, which as a UK based person is amazing. The staff are also very attentive, very obliging at dinner, breakfast and lunch. Food was OK, not amazing but could eat very well and not want for more. The location is great. 5 mins tuk tuk from the hotel or a 15 mins walk and you are in the centre of Kandy. The road up to the hotel is bumby and a bit uncomfortable on a tuk tuk but not unbearable.

Negative

The owner doesn't seem to know what he's charging for or keep track of the bills, so I'd recommend you keep a close eye on the numbers. We were originally charged for an airport pick-up even though we'd been picked up from the (10 mins away) Kandy train station. When challenged he claimed to have mistaken us with someone else (3 hour car journey and 10 min car journey, as well as the fact there were no other UK couples there are not mistakable IMHO).

The tours you book are best arranged somewhere else - we arranged a Kandy City Tour which basically turned out to be a tuk tuk ride around some of the most commercial organisations of the area. Maybe we were naive but we were definitely quoted better for a superior tour of Kandy at Colombo Fort by Linton who owns a hotel in Kandy (Blue Haven) which included the elephant orphange (not a chained up elephant who begrudgingly took us on a ride round the "jungle") and the botanical gardens (which we never saw).

If you book at the Kandy View, make sure you have one of the rooms at the top of the hotel. They are newly built and have spectacular views. Once we'd arrived, after a 10 hour flight and 4 hours on the train, we were told our booked room was not available, which enabled us insight into the other lesser priced rooms. I would not recommend these, and we knew that the owner had other, cleaner rooms available but it seems he put us here simply out of a) laziness b) wanting to see if we'd actually put up with it or c) nothing else available (which was untrue as there was a total of 10 people at best there the whole time).

Overall

As I said, this hotel has great potential. Great views and location and the less senior staff are excellent. We felt the owner was trying to rip us off, or confuse us aboyut the cost incurred which marred our experience somewhat. I hear there are guest houses in Kandy which are better and I would recommend you stay there instead.

Room Tip: The only decent ones are those at the top of the hotel, those that are newly built.
