“Really helpful, friendly and great cooking”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 15, 2012

We stayed 4 nights as our first destination in Sri Lanka and I have to say it was an excellent start. Thomas was fantastic, friendly and helpful couldn't do enough for us really. First day showed us around and gave advice, then sorted a tour guide (Anile) great guy for trips to Sigria / Dumbala. Gave us a real insight into Sri Lankan life and showed the delights of Sri Lankan food (Mango curry for the win).
It's a little out of the way (advise bringing a torch for the last bit of the walk at night) and you're surrounded by jungle noises adding to the ambience but you feel at home and safe. Kandy itself has to be done by all that visit Sri Lanka not just for the cultural
significance but also because it's a gateway into how people are and what you can expect on the rest of your travels.

Thank you to Thomas, Tobi and all those that made our holiday start in the best manner it could and expect a pack of UNO cards to be with you soon :)

Dear PathOfTheBadger,

Thank you so much for the 'excellent' review you've given us. We're so humbled to have been able to give you an excellent 'first-impression' of Sri Lanka! We're also delighted that you had a pleasant experience with our location, food, tour-organisation and most of all, the people, which we believe make all the difference. We've decided to equip each room with a torch adhering to your comments which was also mentioned by a few others. Thomas is anticipating the pack of UNO Cards and we're anticipating you're return to Kandy Cottage to enjoy 'our way of life!'.

It is a relatively unassuming bungalow snuck away on the edge of Kandy, but is extremely charming & homely. Nothing is too much trouble for Thomas as he attends thoughtfully to your every need & serves up delicious food for great value. We also loved watching the scores of monkeys play in the garden. It was a lovely hideaway for our couple of days in Kandy, which we would highly recommend.

We're delighted that you and your family/friends enjoyed every aspect of Sri Lankan hospitality at Kandy Cottage and for taking the time write about us even while you were yet leaving Kandy and bound for Ella on the picturesque train ride. What can we say but many Happy Returns to your home in this part of Sri Lanka!

Wow! What a great little place Thomas is managing in Kandy. It would be perfect for a large group share taking the entire cottage.

The room I had (the one with the skylight) was a decent size, with an ensuite and a thoroughly protective mosquito net. Plenty of hot water, wifi and all the mod cons. It is simple but does the job.

Thomas is a wonderful host / concierge, far better than many a city centre 5 star, organising everything for me from taxis to mountain walks to supper.

The location, which was my main pre arrival concern, is perfect. It is surrounded by forest yet just 10 minutes walk from Kandy lake. Perfectly isolated but not isolated at all. Take a small torch with you for walks home.

One tip that seems to be a secret for those getting to Kandy, there is a seaplane service from Colombo - both city centre and airport direct to Kandy reservoir with the SriLankan air taxi. I mention this as without it I would not have been able to make it to stay at the cottage. And yes Thomas organised my collection from the Kandy 'airport'.

Dear Wayoutback99,

Wow! What wonderful tips to fellow-travelers! We're only disappointed that you didn't stay longer to enjoy the rest of Sri Lanka, though we're confident you'll return to explore. Many thanks for taking the time to write some wonderful comments about the Cottage, emanating especially from a widely traveled personality. We sincerely hope you'll return again!

We recently stayed for 5 nights at Kandy Cottage and what a find!

Situated approximately 10-15mins walk from the busy town centre, the cottage is tucked away within the forest, the location is just excellent to explore Kandy. The rooms are fairly basic but lovely and clean and the cottage has some pleasant communal areas in which to sit and relax. The traditional Sri Lankan breakfasts and curries for dinner were just superb! Make sure you experience dinner at the cottage at least one night of your stay. Part of the charm of this cottage is its forest location and you get to experience the nature that surrounds it in both the day and at night; we certainly enjoyed seeing the wild pigs, monkeys and polecats.

We visited Kandy for the T20 Cricket world cup so it was an added bonus that cottage manager Thomas was just brilliant in helping us plan our days in between the cricket. We thoroughly enjoyed our five nights here and would like to thank all at Kandy Cottage for a wonderful stay. We will be recommending you to anyone visiting Kandy.

We stayed at Kandy Cottage in August and it was great!
15 minutes away from the centre, yet tucked away surrounded by forest!
Only three rooms, so book ahead!
Our room was great! The food was tasty and most of all, Thomas (our host) was an extremely helpfull, honest, happy guy and he gave us a real insight in the life of Sri Lanka. He would do anything to make your stay worthwhile.
Tip: do the temple loop around Kandy (LP guide)! You can do it by foot, the temples are beautiful, and it's not touristic at all!

We are a family of five who stayed for four nights. The room was simple, clean and nice. Tobi was very knowledgeable and helpful on all things Kandy and Thomas was sweet and gave us a wonderful feeling to come back to the Cottage from our explorations. The monkeys who come to the cottage were a nice extra. all in all we were very happy there.
