“Excellent food, extremely helpful staff”
Reviewed September 1, 2012

We had booked for one night in the moonlit room but were lucky enough to have the entire cottage to ourselves during our stay. The cottage is tucked away from Kandy central; about a 10 minute walk from the lake, spotlessly clean and nicely furnished. Our room was comfortable and spacious. Thomas, the new manager of 2-3 months was helpful above and beyond the call of duty, showing us how to walk back into town after we'd settled in, suggesting local attractions, and even giving us advice on how best to secure a good seat in the 2nd class carriage on the Ella-bound train. Had we been more organised and let them know in advance of our travel plans, they would have organised 1st class train tickets for us. As it was, we missed out but Thomas told us exactly where we needed to sit to get the best views on the journey in the 2nd class carriage.

The food & drink were EXCELLENT - one of the two best meals we had during our 2 week stay in Sri Lanka, a selection of beautifully prepared curries, rices, veggies etc for dinner and egg hoppers with the works the following morning.

Thanks, Thomas, for looking after us so well! We managed to survive the 9 hour journey to Ella - I fought hard to secure our seats and the entire experience was well worth it.

Can highly recommended Kandy Cottage for the standard of accommodation, location (peaceful, but not too far from the centre), quality of food and level of service.

Room Tip: Try to get the moonlit room if you are travelling as a couple.

We're glad that Thomas was able to assist you the way he did and that you found his assistance very helpful. Kandy Cottage impressed right from the outset as they arranged transport to collect us from our previous accommodation. The cottage is in a really quiet location yet is only about 15 minutes walk from the main road leading into Kandy itself. The cottage is managed by Thomas who is superb. Nothing was too much trouble for him and he was very attentive to our needs. He even went into Kandy with us to ensure that we got on the right bus to go to the Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya. He also bought us train tickets for our ongoing trip to Nuwara Eliya. The cottage itself is very clean, with polished concrete floors and comfortable en-suite rooms. The only down side is that all three rooms open onto the communal area, which could perhaps be a little noisy depending on other guests staying there. (It wasn't a problem when we were there.)
The food was really good and we had a range of different Sri Lankan curries each night. You certainly wouldn't need to go out in the evening to eat.
We can certainly recommend Kandy Cottage, particulalry for the location and the good sevices of Thomas.

Hi WorcesterWanderer6,

Thank you very much for your review, especially taking the time to make fellow-travelers aware of the various ups and downs of the Cottage. We're glad that you enjoyed our food where we strive at all times to give our invaluable guests the varied tastes of the paradise that is Sri Lanka. We're also delighted that you found Thomas very helpful.
Like you said, if there is a crowd it does tend to become a bit noisy in the morning and the night when all the guests are present but I trust you do realize that this aspect is also part of Kandy Cottage where people of all walks of life meet and I've on many occasions been privy to super-charged conversations over endless cups of tea ;-).
We do encourage guests to book the entire Cottage if privacy is whats needed and have given due consideration in presenting our pricing.
Many thanks again for a lovely review!!

I stayed one night in Kandy and had the good fortune of picking Kandy Cottage. I arrived from the train station in the evening, and Thomas was there waiting to meet me on arrival. From the moment I arrived to the time that I left he was nothing but enormously helpful and informative. The tone of the stay was set with one of the best cups of tea I have had in ages, before Thomas walked me down to Kandy central (a pleasant and short 10 minute walk) along a path that leads past the well known Trinity College. Thomas showed me the best places to grab a bit to eat and where to have a cold beer.

The cottage itself is really good value for money. I paid around Rs 2,800 for a night in the smallest and most basic room, which was completely fit for purpose. You fall asleep and awake to the sounds of nature all around you as the cottage is set on the edge of beautiful natural jungle. A decent breakfast and another few cups of their wonderful tea set me on my way for one of the most eventful train rides to Nuwara Eliya that I have had in ages...!

All in all, Kandy Cottage offers good food, comfortable lodgings and a peaceful location that is still walk able to the centre of town.

Recommended.

This is a fantastic little gem in Kandy. It is much more than just a place to sleep- it feels like a Sri Lankan home from home! Toby and Mani are so accommodating and helpful. Make sure you eat there as the food is absolutely delicious and many of the ingredients are sourced in the garden. I thoroughly enjoyed staying here and would go back in a heartbeat!

We arrived and were instantly made feel at home, given directions and information on the local area and the rest of our trip.
Our room had everything it needed, bed, desk, chair, mossie net and I rustic bathroom (which I loved). We ate at the Cottages on both nights we stayed there after reading and speaking to people on our travels that the guests houses were the best places to eat. It was over a 1000 rupees to eat for both over us, which I personally don't consider is bad for real tasty food and more was given when asked!
The Cottages are a walk away from town, but once on the main road you are a straight walk to the Lake.
I found this a really peaceful place to stay, where nothing was too much trouble. Thank you for a lovely stay!

This is a slightly long report but please read on – we hope the information is useful to you.

Our stay at Kandy Cottage lived up to expectations. Previous reports have been positive and ours is also (with some food portion issues which were dealt with) The Cottage is secluded, quiet, relaxing, restful, clean and welcoming and convenient for everything you are likely to do. Daily running of the Cottage is in the hands of Mr (Why Not!) Thomas – “why not” is his affirmative answer to everything lol. Thomas is a gem and very helpful, his cook prepares some excellent albeit relatively expensive dinners and he is always there with commonsense advice on what to do and where to go. He accompanied us to Kandy town on our first visit. Mr Thomas, thank you.

However, one or two points to note: breakfast on the first morning was unacceptably sparse – roti, jam, butter, and a bunch of small bananas – not enough by a long way to set you up for the day. This improved the second day after pointing out the deficiency to Thomas; then we had an acceptable breakfast of string hopas, curry, lentil, roti, fruit, tea and coffee. The acceptable dinners his cook serves, are charged at 1320 Rupees for two persons; given that a dinner of comparable size in a local café in town is probably half this price it is a decision of convenience and camaraderie over economics if you elect to have dinner “at home’. All this said, we would definitely stay at the Cottage next time and recommend it.

The Temple of the Tooth is a highly revered temple in the eyes of Buddhists and a glimpse of the casket in which the tooth is kept (only at selected times of the day for 30 minutes) is a pilgrimage worthy of a devout Buddhist. However, if you have seen temples in Thailand, Myanmar, and other parts of Sri Lanka, you could give this a miss as the architecture and moderate appearance of the Kandy temple is greatly surpassed by other temples. Look at it from the across the lake and save 1000Rps per person. If you want to really take it in get a guide (500Rp) and devote two or three hours to get an overdose of history. Be appropriately dressed. If you approach it from around the lake, rather from Kandy center, there is no need to walk to the normal entrance opposite Queens hotel, but you can enter near the Culture Center. At the South end

Tuk Tuks, like elsewhere in Sri Lanka are the primary means of transport and drivers come with varying degrees of risk; some should have a Government safety warning attached to them. That said we found an excellent driver, Mr Jenudeen who lived close to Kandy Cottage (Tomas has is number or PM us) he is safe, reliable and spoke good English.

You will be told you should go to the “Culture Show” – 1000 – 1200Rps for one hour of dancing, fire eating, and drums. If you have seen this kind of thing before, you can safely give it a miss. If you get approached for the alternative show at the Red Cross Hall next to the cultural center – it is just the same show despite what the Ticket Touts tell you about children performing, Prime Minister visiting, blah blah. Don’t go to either with Great expectations.

Finally, two words of advice. Learn a few terms about cricket, check how the Sri Lanka side is playing and you can start any conversation in Sri Lanka ☺ with any local person and get involved in all kinds of topic for the next 30 – 60 mins. We actually went to a T Twenty Cricket Competition (that’s where each team has 20 overs, and is a three hour evening match, for the uninitiated) when we visited and it was a memorable evening. Secondly, Kandy is small, and the main area is around 1 km square. Go into the lanes and back streets, this is where you will see some amazing local shops and sights, but go in the day – it is said to become remarkably seedy after dark.

Enjoy

Bill and Lynn
