We arrived at 7pm so having the owner Sarath pick us up from the airport meant we made it to the Freedom Lodge that night instead of having to stay around Colombo. Rs8000, about £40 well spent! This was towards the higher end of our budget but, again, worth it to get a clean room/bathroom and really friendly and helpful hosts.
We have 2 weeks here (backpacker style) and are using buses and trains for most of our travel as it is so cheap and much more enjoyable. We did use one of Sarath's trusted drivers to take us to Pinnewala ele sanctuary, a spice farm and 3 temples near to Kandy which was again money well spent, especially as it pours with rain all day at the moment. Gerard was really friendly, informative and we think good value to see a lot in one day. Buses are fun but only if you have the time.
I would definitely recommend Freedom Lodge but note that the price was Rs3600 as opposed to the recommended cost in the 2012 Lonely Planet of Rs3000-3500.
