“Slighly overpriced average hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2012 via mobile

Hotel is located up a steep hill on the side of the lake opposite to Kandy main tourist attraction - this may be an advantage or a disadvantage, depending on what you are looking for. Service was polite, room price includes a breakfast of toast, egg, a fruit salad and a tee/coffee. Room was clean and it had an old telly. It appeared to be fully booked despite, in my opinion, being overpriced. I paid exactly as much for a three star hotel in Las Vegas, which appears to be in another dimention from Sharon Inn. They also serve buffett dinner in the evening - again, you would have paid the same for an Indian/Sri Lankan buffett dinner in London. Despite this, tables were full every night - apparently there are a lot of people happy to fly half way across the planet to pay London prices for a curry.

So this is a really nice guest house - settled into the hillside with friendly owners and the view from the top room was fantastic. We even had a lovely balcony to sit out on and watch the sun sink after a long day in the town below us.

However, there were a couple of points that really let this place down. Firstly the breakfasts. They seem to pride themselves on a good continental breakfast and don't offer any alternative. This is a shame as it's just not possible to get a continental breakfast off the continent! Go to Sri Lanka for Sri Lankan breakfasts and you'll find them a culinary revelation! Go there for the coffee, or egg on toast and you'll be sorely disappointed! So although it comes free with the room we recommend the restaurant down the road which does goooood local food at goooood local prices!

The other area we felt this guest house fell short is a real tricky one to talk about. The hosts were really good to us - feeding us the night we arrived (free of charge) and welcoming us with such a calm, generous and personable manner that it's really hard to say a word against them. And yet... we did find their complaining about all the other guests who had or hadn't ever turned up VERY intimidating! We felt a great sense of pressure to love them and their guesthouse! They told us of all the bad reviews they've had and how personally they took it - thus making it incredibly hard to write anything negative about them knowing they're going to read it and tell any future guests about "how awful" we were! We really enjoyed it, but, as with all guesthouses, hotels, hostels and such, there were a couple of faults - "room for improvement" if you like. We didn't like having to wait in the canteen style kitchen for all guests to be seated before being allowed to eat our dinner; or the way the owner would sit by the front door in the morning and ask why you're not having breakfast this morning, or the fact that the rooms are twice as much as the lonely planet states (though I think most places are generally more expensive).

But as I've already said, there's lot's to like about this place as well. We can see why it's top dog in the lonely planet guide - having great views, generous and friendly staff and a really chilled out relaxed atmosphere it's going to be great right? And with the standard of the food in the evenings and the fact that there a GUITAR there too - well - need I say more?! We'd go back I think, but we wouldn't take the breakfast!

Room Tip: Just make sure you pay in cash to avoid any hidden extra charges! Top room was 6600rp a night.

We had one night here and enjoyed it thoroughly, the buffet curry at 1100 RS per person was one of the best we had on the whole of our trip and we stayed in alot of places and ate in loads of restaurants. Room was clean and tidy and all the fascilities were in good order.

The rooms were clean, the food was great and the price absolutely reasonable. In compare to "The Change Hotel" definitely the better choice. Some rooms offer a nice view to the city, which is easy to reach by TukTuk or even by foot.

We had dinner at Sharon Inn and we were definitely satisfied! we didn't book in advance so we were asked to share a table, which was not a problem for us, so we had dinner together with a guy from Egypt with whom we had a nice chat. Dinner consisted in a soup, rice and curry and icecream. Everything was excellent, especially all the different vegetables! The owner was kind and the whole athmosphere was cosy.

We were initially delighted with this guest house. It is every bit as clean as everyone says, with well appointed en suite bathrooms, and the beds are very comfortable. The buffet dinner is delicious, but in our view overpriced by local standards. The big shock came at the time of paying the bill. The room prices are already relatively high, but what we were totally unprepared for was a 10% service charge, which boosted the price appreciably. It had not been mentioned at the time of booking. We have never before come across a service charge on a room. Traveller, beware!

Room Tip: Perhaps it is worth asking for a room on an upper floor to benefit from the view.

Great hotel, well priced, good location, clean rooms. Fairly brusque hotel staff but efficient and helpful. Fantastically helpful and friendly Tuk-Tuk driver, Amazing Sri Lankan buffet food - the best I had while I was on holiday. Watch out for the monkeys on the balconies - great evening entertainment watching them :) Would recommend.
