“Good hotel but not value for money”
Reviewed February 27, 2014

We stayed 2 nights in Feb 2014. Very good hotel with good courtyard and welcoming people and warm hospitality. Clean hotel. Eat breafast in lawn etc ...

Not good part is, claim to have wifi but same is only in lobby, hotel beds are creaky, AC was making lot of noise, fan not working. Cost of cup of tea is around 400 INR. No restauratn in the hotel. These areas need to improve. Out of city area.

Room Tip: Do not take the room with 2 floors, toilet down and bedroom up

The good: A colonial mansion that has been restored to a high standard with beautiful gardens. The house is full of character and was great to visit, the owner has clearly put in a lot of effort and it has potential to be a fantastic hotel. I really enjoyed looking around the house and grounds.
The garden is well tended to and nicely set out, a little away from the main road.

Up on arrival, we were greeted with drinks and quickly shown to our room, which was lovely. There were some nice areas you could read in and a Billiards room, although this was locked due to low occupancy.

The not so good: We booked the hotel because it had a pool and spa and wanted to relax after a few days trekking in the Knuckles Mountain Range. The hotel advertises that it has these features. It does have a pool, but it resembled a swamp and was not in use. It does have massage rooms outside near the pool but they weren't in use either, they were unkept and there were no staff for them. We decided to read in the garden instead since we couldn't use the pool, but it was a bit strange as there was a washing line with all the sheets / towels etc. It felt a bit like we were in the staff garden than a guest garden.

We were asked what time we'd like dinner, so we said 7pm expecting to be able to choose off a menu. Instead, we arrived at 7 and were served a gloupy soup (not Sri Lankan). I asked if there was a menu and we were told we would be served a variety of Sri Lankan foods.
The mains came next, the quality was poor. The only curry served, was a fish curry with a resounding 'fishy' taste throughout the whole sauce (i.e. the flavour you get when the fish is not fresh). I could not eat this.
We were then served a Sri Lankan dessert, feely fussy, I didn't like this either. During main course, I asked the price we were being charged for this (since we had no choice, we had no visibilty of price). I was shocked to hear 2000 Rupees. It was by far the most expensive meal of our trip and the worst. When I suggested this was expensive, I was told it was not and there was no choice but to pay.

The service staff were very well-meaning, but apparently untrained. We were under almost constant supervision at dinner and the waiter would run to the kitchen when he had to leave our table and run back. It seemed others had heard about the dining experience and so we were the only people in the restaurant. The radio was on with banging British dance music (I assume the well-meaning staff thought we would appreciate British music, however it was a little inappropriate for dinner). As there was no one else in the building, 3/4 of the dining room lights were turned off, creating even more of an empty and eerie atmosphere.

I was relieved to retire to our room to sleep after this slightly strange dining experience.

Fortunately, we had only booked for one night and checked out the following morning when the so-far absent manager returned. I discussed my concerns with the manager (re pool, dinner etc.) however I was told that this was normal and no apology or concession was made even though I made it clear that I could not recommend this hotel to others unless my concerns were addressed.

My advice to the owners would be to invest in some staff training and maybe engage an experienced hotel consultant. Up on seeing all the work that has been put into restoration of the property - I really really want you to succeed, your staff generally have a very good attitude and genuinely want to help, but it feels they have have been thrown in at the deep end and are unsure what they need to do. The manager has good presence, but needs to respect guest concerns rather than dismissing them.

My advice to other potential guests would be to stay if you want to appreciate some beautifully restored colonial architecture for a night or two. You could enjoy reading on the balcony over looking the gardens, but it's not appropriate if you want to swim / spa / relax in the gardens. I would heavily discourage anyone from eating at this hotel - go into town and get some authentic Sri Lankan cusine!

Manor H, Manager at Manor House Kandy, responded to this review, October 11, 2014
We at Manor House in our efforts to ‘continuously improve’ our service and facilities to our guests take this as a constructive critique and listened well to the advice of the Guest. In this case we’d appreciate if TA would be kind enough to attach this response alongside this comment. Since February 2014 we at Manor House have begun Training of our Staff by hiring a Hotel Consultant and an experienced Hotel Manager and continue to train its staff to serve our Guests with excellent service.
We’ve hired a Chef with over 25 years’ experience in 5 star hotels in SL & overseas to serve high quality food to our valued guests. The swimming pool is being cleansed every day to prevent it getting green and the SPA is operating with a therapist.
Therefore, we would greatly appreciate if TA would kindly remove this negative comment.
Thanking you, Sincerely. Management.

We stayed in the Manor House in Kandy for a couple of nights as a family of four. It is a lovely old building, set in attractive gardens with a small swimming pool - an oasis just a short distance from Kandy. It's been beautifully renovated recently to its original style, and exudes calm and serenity, with a fabulous feeling of space. We loved the early morning ambience in particular. There were several other families staying but it never felt crowded. The staff are very friendly and helpful, but service has a 'Fawlty Towers' feel to it with amusing incidents. Food is not the hotel's strong point, nor is service. The hotel's director was really helpful in advance, but her efficient personal approach didn't really carry through to the whole operation. The hotel is beautiful and we would recommend it, but suggest some staff training.

We arrived at the hotel to the surprise of the care taking staff. They had obviously missed our reservation from the agent we booked with and therefore had no staff or food etc to accept guests. There were no other guests in the hotel and appeared no one else was scheduled to arrive. The building was gorgeously restored manor as advertised. The pool was a bad green colour. I have no doubt our stay would have been lovely if there wasn't a communication error. Not sure about the pool. They scrambled quite a bit to figure out to do with us but after about an hour of confusion we decided to cut our losses and discuss later with the agent. We moved to Elephant Stable which was incredible.

We spent 2 nights between Christmas and New Years at this hotel, a restored colonial mansion. The management and staff were lovely and very helpful.
Food was poor. We had dinner the first night which we were told was a special 4-course Christmas set-menu dinner. It turned out be a disaster--we believe the roast stuffed chicken that was brought out whole on the platter had to have been a leftover cooked Christmas Day itself and reheated. While the cook denied this, one doesn't have to be Julia Child to know an old, dry and stale roast chicken. We simply could not eat it. The breakfasts were a real let-down, cooked-to-death scrambled eggs, a few slices of white bread toast and a little fresh fruit on a plate.
All that being said, the hotel itself has been very well transformed. In particular the upstairs open lounge has retained a lot of its original woodwork and period furnishing. Some of the other furniture, like pseudo-Arab rococo gilded sofas and chairs in the main lobby area are totally out of kilter. The gardens are lovely as is the pool. We could recommend that as much attention and skill were applied to the kitchen as to the gardens.
Would we stare here again? - one would like to say yes, one wants to applied and encourage young entrepreneurs who make a serious effort to preserve part of the past - but we would really have to think about before doing so.

Room Tip: Rooms upstairs are much nicer than those off the main entrance verandah where we stayed.

We were fortunately to spend one night at this beautiful property - lovingly restored to it's former glory by the owners.
A plaque in the dining room has a list of distinguished guests (former prime ministers and diplomats from an era gone by) - we felt privileged to dine there.

Manager and the servers were very courteous and prompt. Always around when you needed them.
We wanted to try the Sri Lankan dishes but the meals were average - not bad at all, but can improve.

Room Tip: Take the time to walk in the expansive garden and the collection of paintings and other artifacts.

I have been there this Summer with my boyfriend and I was totally fallen in love with this place: the Mansion is beatiful (it seems to go back in teh past), you can really relax far form the cahotic Kandy city. The Lady who owned the House is very polite, completely helpful and she gave us a lot of advises.
I definetely would like to recommend this place if you are planning to visit Sri Lanka!

Francesca
