“Favourite stay in Sri Lanka”
Reviewed July 15, 2014

Stayed for 2 nights in July. Really lovely and comfortable rooms, views were amazing, food was great and staff very helpful and friendly.
We were the only guests staying at the time, and so every morning we had breakfast on the small public balcony overlooking the valley, river and jungle - very special, it felt like your own home.
I would also encourage those looking to stay to try the ayurvedic massage offered here - the guy was incredible.
Special place, and incredibly good value.

Villa Rosa was a hard find, even for our experienced driver. But once through the doors, the establishment was just wonderful. A converted and extended home high up over Kandy, Villa Rosa has magnificent views, a really lovely garden, and above average rooms, each with privacy and simple comforts that make it a real sanctuary after the maelstrom of downtown Kandy. Food is superb (do eat the Sri Lankan curry here, it's exceptional). It's a very zen place, with really lovely staff and an air of peace and tranquility that make it very special. A few cons to offset the pros - the road up us perilous and you won't want to go anyplace without your driver, the bathrooms could do with a bit of a refit, but beyond that I'd go back tomorrow. Kudos to the staff, who do so much so simply and with such courtesy.

Room Tip: Ask for one overlooking the valley - spectacular!

Stayed here in June 14 for 3 nights in the family suite. Fantastic helpful and friendly staff, beautiful food, lovely room and bathroom, beautiful view. We couldn't have asked for more. Thank you to everyone for looking after us so well and making our stay at Kandy so memorable. Thank you also to our driver David who drove us safely to Arugam Bay.

Stayed here for 2 nights on a tour around Sri Lanka. Had Room 1 on the ground floor with a terrace. The view down the river valley was breath-taking. Had breakfast and dinner served on our terrace so we could admire the view. Food was excellent and service impeccable. Wanted to go swimming so a tuk-tuk was provided to take us down the hill to a large hotel with a big pool and back again. Nice touch.

This was probably the best hotel we stayed at in Sri Lanka, from the start Volker made us very welcome and gave us a guided tour of the hotel. We had a family suite on the first floor which consisted of 2 bedrooms, one with a king size double bed and the other with 2 single beds, a large bathroom and walk in shower and a large balcony over looking the gorge.
All meals could be served in the restaurant or at outside tables overlooking a fantastic view of the river.
Food was good, room was clean and all the staff were helpful and polite. The hotel would call a TukTuk for us to get into town which took 10 mins to the centre of town, which the hotel paid for. It was easy to get a TukTuk back to the hotel.
We would defiantly stay here again.

My friends and I had just left 5 relaxing and gorgeous days on the beach and were thinking that the Villa Rosa could in no way be as great as where we had just been. With the long drive and a few stops we started the steep climb to Villa Rosa and thought we were either lost or going to somewhere underwhelming, and yes, we had seen the pics and reviews, but were still not confident. Then we arrived. Nice. Then we walked through the entrance. Aaaaahhhh. Oooooohhhh. Wow. Crappy attitudes changed with one look at the scenery that was before us. Then the tour from a friendly host and the keys to our gorgeous room. From there it just went up, up, up.
Villa Rosa is fantastic and a great way to really slow down and relax before a long flight home. The views are fantastic, the staff is very helpful and knowledgeable, and the owners do all that they can to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
They gave us a few options on tea plantation excursions. We choose the shorter excursion where we started on the train, transferred to a car and wound our way up into the mountains where we stopped at the factory and then ended at an eco lodge situated in a plantation. Beautiful trip and a good look at the hard work it takes to make sure we get our cups of tea.
Each day started and ended with a lovely dinner on the terrace at Villa Rosa. We had very good Sri Lankan dinners the entire time, but you can also choose Western fare if you like. Some of the Sri Lankan curry can be pretty spicy so beware.
One thing to watch for at dusk are the flight of the fruit bats over the river. Very cool.
Our room did not have air con. Not sure if you need it in Kandy. However, if you need air con no matter the temperature, please check with them before you book.
I recommend Villa Rosa to everyone. Fantastic.

Room Tip: Corner suites are large and sunny with a private patio.

Villa Rosa is close to Kandy yet away from the busy centre. Wonderful views - although it's a steep climb up to the hotel. Wonderful food and guests are welcome to visit the kitchen - the cleanest kitchen I've ever seen!
Staff are first class and the owner is always on hand to help with arrangements. We used a neighbouring hotel's swimming pool and this was great for the teenage girls - the hotel arranges and pays for a Tuk Tuk to take you there and it's great fun! We stayed in the family room- if I'm being critical the bathroom could be modernised but it was functional and clean enough. I suspect the views are better from the rooms in the main villa but we opted for the family room which on balance was probably more suitable. Good choice of hotel in Kandy!
