“Worse Hotel that I have ever been”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

Staff is really polite and good people .BUT THEY ARE NOT TRAINED. Room's floor is really dirty.mini fridge is not working. Don't know what's the point of keeping it. They are serving fried rice with chicken , three veg. Curries ( potato tempered , bean curry polos )and chutney . I don't know what kind of impression they have about customers . they think we don't know about food we just eat what they give. They take more than 20min when we call for house keeping. I don't think it takes 20 min from temple to get to the hotel. They don't have a direct number for house keeping when we call room service they are saying we have to call reception (0) when we call reception they are saying we have to call room service ( 253) . It's really funny. They are targeting foreigners . foreigners won't be coming through out the year. But locals always there. They don't know how much they are loosing. I don't know owners know the damage that his managers have caused. One person can change these. He'd better get rid of those managers and get qualified one person. One person can make a big change of this Hotel.I ll not recommend this hotel to anyone. it's better to spend bit more and go for the best . Unfortunately this was the only hotel which was not fully booked. Now we know why ???????? I ll never ever come back this hotel even they give free of charge.

We enjoyed our stay at Thilanka - we had two, clean, good sized adjacent rooms which were comfortable with air-con and fans. The location is really good with views over the lake and it has a fair sized pool and a lovely bar with free wi-fi. The buffet selection was extensive and good value, staff were helpful and service was prompt. The ensuite bathrooms are beginning to look a bit tired, but this really the only criticism of what is a very pleasant city hotel.

The best thing about the hotel is definitely the location! Both in terms of the wonderful view from the Hill top over looking Kandy lake and the proximity to the Temple of the Tooth, Lake, Garrison Cemetery & Kandyian Dancing, all within a 5minutes walk down the hill (a bit longer on the way back up but you could use a tuk tuk).

Rooms are modern but obviously well used and looking tired. The ensuite bathroom is clean, but finishings are not great. It does include a bath with overhead shower and one of the best hairdryers of the trip. The room also has AC, safe, small fridge,tv and very sensibly plug sockets underneath mirrors. Our room also had a balcony with a great view but we were warned to keep it locked because "those cheeky monkeys come in and steal your things!" We did as we were told and had no problem other than staring faces through the window but other guests had clothes taken and apparently a wallet.

The hotel has a great pool and sun beds which look over the city. This is also where you pick up WiFi as its not available in the room. Breakfast included in the room price is a standard buffet. The hotel offers evening meals buffet style but again you are close to restaurants and eateries if you want eat out.

Given the price of a room this hotel it is a really good value option!

First of all we had booked a deluxe triple room, even after asking to be moved we were still put in another double room. Not what we paid for!

The evening restaurant buffet was good, although the evening enterainment was pretty awful, may be better not to have any! Breakfast was fine.

The room was clean with a decent shower, but of the 5 hotels we stayed in in Sri Lanka this was the most disappointing.

We arrived on the day of the full moon festival and apparently no alcohol can be served except for in the hotels...not sure who was telling the truth but we couldn't get a beer, which was annoying in such a big hotel.

We didn't particularly like Kandy, it was very busy and rained a lot! The monleys were fun though, and we saw mongoose running around in the evening.

Basically, not a disaster but nothing special either.

Room Tip: Insist on being in the newly renovated rooms.

We stayed two nights at the Thilanka, really enjoyed the hotel, very clean, very good service, room fully equiped, Wifi by the swimming pool, great view on the lake and the city.
Very nice service at the pool, open until 20.00 in the evening, cosy bar close to the pool.
Restaurant offers enough choice for local food, if you get bored with eating from the buffet every day.
As indicated in the room, beware of the monkeys, they pop up every morning around 7.00 on your balcony, so keep the door closed

This was the third hotel I stayed in in Sri Lanka (because I was traveling around the whole country) It was also the best out of the three that I stayed in.

Upon arrival the staff were very friendly, they allowed me to check the room before I signed up to anything and once I accepted they brought my bags up. To get to my room I had to get two separate lifts but it's not too bad as long as you remember where to go, its not that hard! The room was beautiful and clean and I had a lovely view from the balcony. There was also a sofa and TV. The beds were comfortable and there was A/C and a fan.

The pool area was very nice as was the bar with a huge selection of drinks.Breakfast was very nice, with a selection of fruits, breads, meats, cereals and juices and other things too. Whilst having breakfast you can watch monkeys, there are a lot of monkeys!

The hotel is close to the lake, the temple of the tooth and the city centre. Be warned if you visit the temple of the tooth make sure to cover shoulders and knees and try to wear a white top. Also they charge tourists to go in but I managed to slyly avoid that because I was with a local. But its only about £5 i think.

When checking out I asked the staff to collect my bags and they did very quickly and I was off. I think it was money well spent and I would definitely go back and recommend it to anyone staying in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

We loved our stay here and had a great experience. We stopped over enroute back to Hikkaduwa and visited the nearby Fire-walking/Street dancing show. Which is well worth seeing and our 7 yr old loved it. The hotel staff are courteous, prompt and very friendly. We has half board and have no complaints about the food but were only there one night so cannot comment on repetition. The pool was also good to experience and a nice refreshing dip after a long days travelling. In the morning we were greeted by a huge amount of "cheeky monkeys" on the balcony - whom are looking for food, they are not aggressive but are persistent and you should be aware not to leave valuables on the balcony - they will go missing! The close up experience with the monkeys is worth the stay alone. The rooms have AC and are modern and clean. The bathroom had the best shower experience we have had in Sri Lanka - hot water and pressure!
