Warm welcome and friendly manner of the management gave us a gleaming happiness of the moment we entered to the "Piachaud Suite" where Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip stayed in 1954. "Piachaud Suite" consists of elegant sitting area and two bedrooms decorated with traditional but prestigious furniture. Glamorous 270 degree balcony attached to this suite gave us a heartfelt experience of the view of the "Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic" (Sri Dalada Maligawa) and the "Kandy Lake" (Nuwara Wewa) both together. We had a pleasing evening at this balcony which gave us the smell of sacred and warm inner feelings as a landmark of our life. Sober environment of the hotel premises and the all over cleanliness are very much appreciated. The buffet had variety of tasty dishes. All over hotel staff had broad understanding of the hospitality.

This could be a truly wonderful hotel. The location is fantatstic, by the lake and opposite the Temple of the Tooth and it is a beautiful old colonial building. The rooms and all the public areas are spacious, and must have been lovely at one time. Sadly, apart from polishing the wooden floors beautifully, the hotel is poorly maintained and in need of refurbishment. The bedroom was large with several areas, however the layout was bad, the furnishings dated and worn and the bathroom very poor.

Sadly, the worst aspect was the staff training. The staff were lovely people but poorly trained and not competant. This is not their fault, it's clearly a management issue. The concierge desk was not able to give any local help to find a restaurant that was open on the New Year holiday.

Food was generally OK and reasonably priced, but nothing special.

Overall, not really recommended.

Was recommended to stay here by a friend.

Despite having booked a few months earlier directly with the hotel and having that booking reconfirmed a week prior to arrival there was much angst at the desk when we arrived. It was clear our booking had been messed up. After 20 minutes of waiting we were shown to a very basic and average room on the second floor.

To pay top dollar for a room so basic and a bathroom so small was unacceptable.

At times the staff were disinterented - the breakfast bar was very average. All we could eat was the fruit and the omelettes from the omelette station.

On the positive side, the pool was excellent and the bar area was lovely to sit in and relax. The location is perfect being opposite the Tooth Temple.

Oh and the guys downstairs at Royce Tours are EXCELLENT! They are well worth hiring for the day if you want to see the sights or go on an Elephant Tour. cant recommend them enough!

But really, the place would have looked good in the 40s - its time for a renovation and a clean up. And stop charging the punters so much for a night when really its of three star standard at best!

Room tip: Just make sure they have your booking

The Queens Hotel is almost as synonymous with Kandy City as the lake and the temple. I remember staying there as a child - during the Perahera - standing on the balcony watching the parade.

We popped in yesterday - to quench our thirst and grab something to eat having spent the morning sightseeing.

It was disappointing that the hotel doesn’t reflect its rich history. It’s very tired and in need of refurbishment. I’d still recommend dropping by if you’re in Kandy just to have a look and learn about its place in Kandy history - but don’t make a special trip - that is unless you hear it has been extensively renovated.

BTW: club sandwich and lion beer certainly did the trick - we left reinvigorated and ready to go again!
