“HERITAGE HOTEL WITH MODERN COMFORTS”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2012

Queens Hotel kandy which is decades old is still in very good shape. It has all modern conveniences and well trained staff who are always with a smile and ready to serve you.
There is a wide selection of food both Western as well as eastern. Try Egg Hoppers for Dinner and String Hoppers for Breakfast . The prices are reasonable compared to other Hotels.

Room Tip: You could request for a Room facing the lake where you can enjoy viewing birds and swans and aee the...

We were only in Kandy for one night and I wanted somewhere central to stay. The tour company putting together the itinerary said there were no high-end hotels in Kandy, so organised the best rooms at the Queens Hotel as a 'second best' option.

The hotel is beautiful -- full of colonial grandeur. Lonely Planet says it's what the Sofitel Metropole in Hanoi, or the Amangalla in Galle, would have been like before being spruced up. I would have to agree.

The pool is large and has a good sized area around it for drinking a beer at the end of the day.

We got the corner rooms on levels 2 and 3, overlooking the temple and lake. Each suite had a living room, two bedrooms and a bathroom. Layouts were a bit odd, but opening the windows up to the activity outside was wonderful. This is the kind of suite you want to book for a month or two, and write a novel.

Location is perfect, right in the middle of Kandy, by the lake and close to the central area with restaurants and bars. The Temple of the Tooth Relic is literally across the street.

Don't miss this one, and shell out on a good room. Prices are very reasonable.

Room Tip: The corner suites overlooking the temple/lake are pretty special. Given the prices here, splash out...

Stayed at the Hotel during the Cricket 20/20' world cup. The location is perfect right opposite the lake and near the attractions of Kandy.
The rooms are tired but perfectly acceptable. A couple of things to be aware of though:
If you have a room at the front of the Hotel facing the Lake you will be woken up at 5am by the wailing sound of the call to prayer, take my word for it it will wake you up. Ask at reception and make sure you gets a pool facing room.
While I was there the Hotel was full and I was put in the West wing which is miles away from reception and a little bit spooky with no sign of fire exits. The room was fine but the number of stairs and corridors you have to negotiate means you have no idea where you are which is a bit unnerving. I am not normally spooked by anything but a night in the West wing of the Queens will test your mettle.
The pool is great and the staff are very very helpfully, apart from breakfast ( which was very good)
we didn't eat at the Hotel but we had reports that the Chinese was excellent.
Being the 3rd oldest Hotel in Sri Lanka it is not modern but everything works and for the price it is perfect.

Room Tip: Don't get one facing the Lake - you won't sleep past 5am. If you can, get a pool facing roo...

This hotel may not be for everyone but it was great to experience it. We imagined it in its heyday decades previously. Problems for our driver parking in organised chaos and slow check in but isnt that all part of the experience. It is opposite the beautiful lake which we walked around early in the morning and Temple of the Tooth is right there too. Right in the middle of old Kandy, close to The Pub for dinner and a supermarket opposite too ! The Bar was fun and breakfast was served with friendly service in the old dining room. Rooms dated but we've been in far worse. Try it for the experince and location. Ps try some filled pastries for lunch from one of the nearby modern bakeries

Well located hotel in central Kandy near many tourist locations & eateries. In the heat of the day we found the Queens Hotel a wonderful spot to relax and cool off in the verandah area and enjoy a beer or cool drink. Staff very attentive and friendly. The disappointment was the restaurant. On the evening we decided to eat there the only option was the Chinese banquet. There were numerous choices and it looked spectacular with lots of carved vegetables, watermelon etc but the food was tasteless. Again, staff were excellent but the food let us down.

This is an old hotel, plenty of character in a really good location. We were allocated a large room but I think it was a little overpriced. Breakfast excellent and good value. As fas as other meals this hotel provides good value meals. Try the Chinese restaurant, excellent. Enjoyable stay. Staff very friendly.

This place was a real bummer. After checking in and opening the door to our room, it only took one step through the door before my nose and eyes were both in disbelief. It smelled old and it WAS old. This room made me feel dirty just being in it. I touched the bed cautiously and felt the spring through the mattress. I heard plastic crackling as I pushed down on it as if this had just been recycled from an old sofa bed. I looked around and checked the bathroom. The faucets looked like Victorian-era antiques, but not in a good way. Everything from the floorboard to the lampshades were in tatters. There was no way I was staying in this room. We went back to the lobby down the creaky stairs covered in what used to be red carpet but is now almost black. We explained the predicament and expressed our disappointment to the representative. He was actually very gracious and understanding and tried to explain the bad news: all the rooms in the hotel were “of the same standard.” Knowing that there weren’t many other options in Kandy, I started sweating at the thought of having to spend two nights here. He offered to show us another room. We walked for 4 or 5 minutes to get to this room on the backside of the hotel. On the way, he had to switch on lights manually. It looked like it was the forgotten wing. I was expecting bats to fly out from somewhere. Anyway, this room was even worse! It stunk as if the doors and windows had been closed for years. We went back to the desk. We started looking online at other hotels in the area and were shocked to find that the Queen’s Hotel was essentially the best option in the city, despite having only 3.5 points on Trip Advisor. The nicer options were all just outside of the city – a car ride away. Then the nice man at the desk offered to upgrade us to a “newer” room for an additional $54 a night. With the cost of the original reservation we would be up to $140 a night… For this nightmarish hotel? Unbelievable! How is this possible? We went to look at the room. It was newer in the sense that I would feel comfortable walking around bare foot and it didn’t stink.

Bottom line: this place is gruesome. I haven’t seen a hotel this old and disgusting in my whole life… especially given the price! The man at the desk was super nice and I felt bad that he probably knew how gross it is but was just doing his job.

The breakfast was terrible. Same thing reheated every morning. The omelet guy walks away and just forgets you ordered something and then denies you ever did when you go to pick it up.

Please do yourself a favor and find something outside of the city. It’s your only chance at a decent stay.
