Standard Sri Lankan colonial hotel, comfortable enough but a bit old and fusty (as colonial suggests). Good service from too many staff as per every hotel in Sri Lanka. Unfortunately our room had bed bugs which we discovered at 2am on the second night after my girlfriend had been bitten to shreds on the first night. Had to move rooms in the middles of the night which completely ruined the stay.

Would have been fine other than this rather unfortunate and major issue. Possibly a bit overpriced.

We stayed for 11 days at this hotel. We had a large room with our own private balcony on the fourth floor. The staff was excellent. Our room was cleaned well and the food and presentation was also very good. Guests can cash traveller's checks or buy stamps at the front desk. There is a mail box to post letters in the hotel. Location is also very convenient to see Kandy town and surrounding areas. The trishaws are a very good way to see the town, but do discuss the fair with the driver before you get into the cab. The hotel does need some updating, which we were told was planned for later this year. It was a very good visit and we will return in the future.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a private balcony.

Had a very enjoyable 2 night, 3 day stay here as part of a tour. The rooms were clean and bright. Restaurant was huge, (a galleried Ballroom, perhaps), and the choices at the Buffet for breakfast and dinner, were numerous, well presented and very much enjoyed..

Staff - waiters and porters were very pleasant and attentive.
Would certainly recommend.

We stayed here for 1 night after a long drive from Dambulla and it was a hotel suggested to us by our driver. The façade of the hotel is very impressive, it being a grand colonial building surrounded by beautifully tendered garden and facing the Lake. It is only about 2 minutes to the city by tuk-tuk or you can walk, if you feel up to it.

The room given to us was very spacious and the furniture, although dated, blended in well with the rest of the furnishing. The hotel is conveniently located near the Kandyan Art Association & Cultural Centre, where we watched the Kandyan Dancers and Drummers. After the show, we walked from there to the nearby Temple of the Sacred Tooth.

Breakfast was served in a huge hall with many tables and we found the spread to be very generous. The whole setting, coupled with the waiters in their crisp, white uniforms reminded us very much of the British-India era.

We experienced a very unpleasant situation when halfway through breakfast, we realized that we have accidentally left our rucksack with ALL our money and valuables in the room. I rushed back to the room with the intention to retrieve the rucksack only to find the room to be locked from the inside. I banged on the door and after awhile, it was opened by one of the hotel staffs who claimed that he was cleaning the room. I scanned the room quickly with my eyes and realized that our rucksack was untouched and thought to myself that he must have just only entered the room when I tried to get into the room. From his nervous demeanour, I knew for sure that he was lying because most rooms are cleaned by staffs with the doors opened and not closed. He also did not have the normal room cleaning stuffs with him. After ensuring that nothing was missing from our rucksack, I confronted him and said that there is no reason for him to clean our room as we will be checking out on in a few hours’ time.

To my question of why did he locked the door, he only managed to stammer a few inaudible replies and kept repeating that he was only cleaning the room. Since we have lost nothing, we decided to let the matter rest and not waste our time complaining about him to the management when we do not have any proof that he has committed any crime. Be that as it may, we hope our unpleasant experience will serve as a precaution for others who choose to stay at this hotel.

This hotel was part of our package trip, not upto a very good standard.
The rooms smelt fusty and dirty, the bed linen on one bed was dirty, The electrics in the room were not working properly.
The room in general was grimmy. smelly, did not have a very good nights sleep.
In the bar were very large cockroaches!!!
The food was not bad in the resturant.
Staff friendly.
I did feel I got done when I changed some cash at the hotel, only got 140 to the £, no paperwork was given as a receipt.
But in their favour they did some washing and got it back to me for a 6.30am start.

Spent two nights here on a Sri Lanka tour with Explore Worldwide including New years eve.
Our first room was immediately next to the dining room with live band so asked for a move and hit lucky being given a suite at the from over looking the swimming pool.
Others in our group were not so luck having much poorer standard rooms.

The suite was clean, had a nice bathroom which whilst had marble top still had lots of bits to be finished off. Had a fan and AC and had a separate sitting area separated by a door to the bedroom. Fridge provided. Tv had BBC world and sports channel in
English.
On New Years eve there was alive band and a full buffet which was superbly presented if not quite taste as nice as it looked.

Our guide told us that the hotel has been bought by Raffles Singapore and is awaiting a revamp.

The sweeping approach to the port cochere prepares you for the grand public room. With the hotel being set on the side of a hill, on Kandy Lake, the public rooms are up on the second floor.
Christmas Eve saw a vast buffet of delicious foods with exquisite care having been taken with all the deocrations (tasteful and subdued rather than tacky and tawdry). There was even a children's choir singing some carols from the minstrel's gallery in the central dining hall (this must look spectacular whenever they hold a ball here).
The reason for "Sleep" only getting 2 stars was due to the Christmas eve band. There were quite a few kids staying in the hotel and so it was important for them to be fast asleep by midnight in order to have Father Christmas pay them a visit. The band had been playing during supper and then stopped at 11.20 - lots of kids now fast asleep. Their peaceful sleep, and my own, came to a shattering end at 11.45 when the band struck up again, louder than before and kept going well past midnight. The band was appranetly due to stop at 12.30 but it stopped before then, as soon as pointed out that there were no guests left in the restaurant and that the band was only playing for the staff.
Apart from that glitch, I thoroughly loved the atmosphere in this hotel.
It had also been Lord Mountbatten's residence while he was C-in-C of the Burma campaign.
