“Blow, the family heritage lives on”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2013

The colourful history of the Blow family lives on in multi coloured hues, multi dimensional feasts for the eyes and not forgetting the stomach.
As warned by Helga herself on the website this is not for everyone, too many narrow minded prissy people about with no sense of adventure.
You do need a sense of humour to fully enjoy the total over the top decor. The wonders of her vivid imagination and the sheer spectacle of the woman herself. God bless her parents for allowing her natural persona to shine through.
Ok to the Folly herself.
Many words of explanation of the sheer folly of the folly have been used. Andrew Logan and Zandra Rhodes used WONDERFUL, summed it up perfectly for me.

The online booking and the fact you can mail Helga herself make it easy to ask questions which are answered personally and quickly.

The arrival greeting at reception is personal and genuine.

Get to know the staff, they are there to make your stay enjoyable and the service is not servile but professional, respectful and personal.

Wander around in awe as the visual delights, you will find new experiences every time you look and at different times of day different experiences. Night time is especially magical.

You do need to order your meals well in advance to get the best choices, go with the flow, don't fight the system, it works incredibly well. What ever your choice you will not be disappointed, I challenge you to be able to finish the very well cooked substantial portions.

Beds are comfortable, there are fans, a/c units and mozzie nets, you don't need any of them. All the rooms are spacious and each its own individual over the top them.Elegant but with a twist of Helga's imagination.

She, the folly is very relaxing, a wonderful place to unwind. Have a drink at the bar, watch a movie in the small cinema.

I only had the one night but look forward to returning when coffers have refilled, its not exactly a budget place to stay but worth every rupee for the experience.

Room Tip: If you are here for a special reason BLOW the budget and go for a suite to fully enjoy the complete...

Tucked away in Kandy this beautiful place is such a great experience even to just visit for a meal. Every room is full of interesting bits and bobs, artwork, murals and the most weird and wonderful ornaments. We visiting three times during our stay in Kandy and were made to feel very welcome by the incredible charismatic owner who made a point to meet us and get to know us. One of the girls we were with had a birthday during the trip and we booked for a special meal here, Helga made such a delightful fuss of us and even bought the birthday girl a lovely bracelet. The food was great and a great treat sitting in the glamorous dining room drinking from goblets. A lovely lovely time I highly recommend!

This is a great place to go for a drink in Kandy. We didn't opt to eat here but the drinks selection is excellent although with western prices. The staff and owner are extremely friendly and happy to let you explore the hotel.

The hotel itself, is full or vintage furniture and all sorts really. Needs to be seen to be really appreciated.

Worth getting a Tuk-Tuk as it's a steep climb and negotiate the price on the return trip as the drivers try to ask higher prices for the return trip.

We loved loved loved. It was beyond words for us. We just went to see this magical place as we knew it already before comming to Kandy. But the time we spent there was much much more than we expected! First we went to see inside, than we decided to drink someting, after we said may be we have dinner here(which was very delicious, we had tuna fish and delicious dessert icecream with chilly chocolate sauce.) at the end we stayed that night there. all the stuff and the new menager were always around to help us and to inform us. The best part was meeting dear Helga and listening her truly magical life story.. She gave as a chance to have such a beautiful memory and we will always remember with a biigg smile!! Definetely it s wort staying there!!

We went for a drink one evening during our stay in Kandy - it's well worth it as the place is spectacular, you'll need to get a tuk-tuk if you're not staying there but it's worth it! Service was friendly anddrinks reasonably priced

We arrived at Helga's Folly straight from the airport and were welcomed by a drink in a room playing Frank Sinatra with fairy lights twinkling. We were shown to our rooms, bowled over by the imaginative, original and fantastic decor - in our opinion it was the reason for wanting to stay, you walk around HF excited as you want to see what surprise is painted around the corner - it was a feast for the eyes. Dinner was a superb experience, it was our first taste of Sri Lankan cuisine and the food was delicious, from the appetiser through to dessert and the most incredible jasmine green tea that we have ever tasted. We stayed two nights and, despite not hearing our alarms therefore waking up past midday, we were delighted to hear they had kept breakfast waiting for us! This is hotel first for us! Night two was pretty much an identical experience except we added in a quick dip in the pool (it's a must see in daylight too!). The staff is impeccable and cannot do enough to help, they were the most friendly staff we came across in 10 days - in fact, they were a huge reason for our enjoyable stay. Helga was very available should we have needed anything but the staff had it all under control - we were perfectly happy. It is like no place that we have ever stayed, it is slightly bonkers / off the wall / creative and it may not suit some (as per website suggestions!) but we found it a magical place full of personality and we were sad to leave. Thank you Helga's Folly.

Having read various and varied reviews of this place we felt compelled to check it out.

It is certainly unique. We went in for a drink and ended up paying roughly equivalent to the €3 charge per head to look around you would otherwise be charged.

The interior was eclectic with beauty and the beast style candle sticks and an awful lot of other things going on! Not to my taste and wouldn't want to stay there but interesting to have a gawp at!
