“Avoid the non A/C rooms”
Reviewed February 5, 2014

The non A/C rooms are very simple, with shared bathroom (very small bathroom), the isolation is quite bad, and you can hear everything happening in the rooms next door and in the corridor. The Deluxe Superior rooms are a bit better, however, they are a bit noisy as they are next to the dining area. However, their open-air dining area is very nice, and the hotel is located in the City Centre (2 minutes from the lake).

This was in a good location to see attractions and not far from the bus and train. Although we had a room that was next to the dining area, all noise had stopped by 11pm. The room was tiny with no window but this helped it keep cool. There was also a mosquito net and a fan. There are plenty of restaurants near by and a great little café round the corner serving Sri Lankan breakfast and coffee. Good place to stay for a night or two whilst visiting Kandy.

Great location (close to shops, restaurants and The Tooth Temple), but the rest doesn't live up to the mark. Sanitary standards are incredibly low and many staff members do not even speak basic English (we asked for tea 3 times, but were brought coffee each time instead), even though some have willingness to help. Food is overpriced 2-3 times compared to a number of next-door restaurants. Bathroom was a mess. My wife was totally freaked out by a large cockroach at the entrance of our room (it emerged from the old matress lying on the floor right opposite our room during our entire tenure - 3 days). Get a mosquito net no matter what. Would recommend choosing any other available place, even if it's a bit up on the mountain. This place is not worth the money it charges.

Room Tip: Do not take room 6 no matter what.

We arrived there to spend one night while in Kandy. When I saw spiderwebs and spiders all over bathroom walls and ceiling I asked the manager if those could be cleaned while we went to have dinner. When we came back the bathroom looked untouched! The manager said it has been cleaned... My husband asked for a broom and cleaned the place himself(!). When we saw a cockroach we decided we didn't want to stay another minute. We left the place and saw the staff sleeping on mattresses in the hallway, with cockroaches running around. Went to a different hotel and contacted booking.com about the conditions in this hotel. The owner later claimed we could have gotten a different room. He said they were fully booked when we had asked... Awful experience.

We stayed here for two nights and it is safe to say that this was the worst accommodation during our Sri Lankan trip. The owner/manager realised we weren't happy and tried to help us as much as he could, but all was lost with the accommodation and the staff.

Negatives: the rooms are so noisy that we had to (multiple times each night) tell the staff to quietened down because we couldn't even hear our own thoughts let alone sleep. The staff were rude and when I tried to complain either ignored me or argued and yelled at me. The bathrooms are not attached to most rooms and even though they are cleaned regularly are still dirty. The toilets don't flush and there are bugs and cockroaches everywhere. The rooms are hot and only have one PowerPoint which we used for a fan. Make sure to use the mosquito nets because you'll be eaten alive otherwise. The food and drinks are very expensive (except their set rice and curry meals which are not on the menu. But by this stage I had no patience and didn't want to give this hotel another rupee!). The staff are only friendly when the manager is in front of them, otherwise they are rude and arrogant. There is one bathroom upstairs for 5 or 6 rooms and every time we went to use it it was being occupied by staff members taking showers. It's not worth staying here even for the price or location. I will never come back here and I will never recommend it.

Positives: location is good and it has some nice sitting areas. The manager really is trying to make this a better place, but I would definitely start by replacing all of his staff! And keeping one bathroom as staff only so that the ONE and ONLY bathroom upstairs is available for the max 12 guests.

DONT STAY HERE.

The hotel is situated very close to the centre of Kandy. Amongst the shops and restaurants etc and very close to the Temple of the Tooth and lake.

This is a good budget option and for its location it is a good price comparatively. However, it comes with plenty of bad too...

The rooms downstairs are the better rooms (although ours was damp and smelly), and these rooms have their own bathrooms. However, the restaurant is set right bang in the middle of all of the rooms, and it's loud. Loud last thing at night and loud first thing in the morning - and it's not even a busy restaurant! It's just the clattering of pots and pans and chat amongst the staff.

The rooms are basic but do the job.

If you're after a good and reliable tuk-tuk driver in Kandy, phone our tuk-tuk driver Saman. He speaks decent English and his prices are fair. For example 1000R to Botanical Gardens including waiting, and 2500R to Elephant Orphanage including waiting. We tipped him good both times as he was a genuine decent gentleman. His number is 0755 626 845.

Stayed one night at Charlton Kandy Rest. Experienced the warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality as soon as I landed in Kandy. I got a pickup from the train station by the hotel owner Mr. Saman. As I was in Kandy just for the evening, he took me to Arthur's seat to get the city view and the main streets of Kandy and gave an insight into the history of the place.

The rooms are clean and very well maintained. I found the shared bathrooms are bit unclean but manageable. The location of the guesthouse is unbeatable with the Tooth relic Temple 2 min away by walk.
