Attraction details
Owner description: Formerly known as Pitakande Military Cemetery, it was acquired originally by the military authorities, and was subsequently taken over by the Commission as a permanent war cemetery. Kandy is in central Sri Lanka, 910 metres above sea-level. It is 121 kilometres north-east of Colombo, from which it is easily reached by road. From the Botanical Gardens at Peridenya, take the road to Kandy. Just past the gardens, take a left turning at the roadside direction sign, down Lady Magdalene Drive. The Cemetery is approximately 1.5 kilometres along this road.

“Peaceful”
Reviewed April 25, 2014

We were lucky enough to be shown this cemetery by the caretaker who was retiring that week after over 40 years of tending the cemetery. He told us stories of the men buried there. The place was immaculate, peaceful and you felt was tended with real respect for those buried there. The retiring caretaker was very sad to be leaving and we hope his replacement will do as good a job.

“worth a visit”
Reviewed April 23, 2014

This is a typically well tended War graves site. There always seem to be helpful people around in Sri Lanka. We were guided by the caretaker who was both knowledgeable and interesting

“Very well maintained quiet cemetery for the heroes of the past”
Reviewed April 21, 2014 via mobile

Very nice and quiet place. You can see tombs of soldiers from different countries and religions, all from different backgrounds. There is a big staff working there and the place is very well maintained.

“A time to reflect - reserved for the few”
Reviewed April 9, 2014

The Commonwealth War Cemetery on Dewani Rajasinghe Mawatha in Kandy is a well maintained green cemetery in the heart of town. It is a place to visit for the traveler who sees in tragedy, hope. In this place as you read the epitaphs of men who had laid down their lives, almost all, have died so far from their homes, you feel the presence of that great emotion which bring a sadness and balance in our lives. Those with a sense of history would appreciate this brief break to reflect; and to take hope in such great sacrifice which gave their countrymen another day. Not for all - but special for some
