“By far the best restaurant we've been in Sri Lanka”
Reviewed October 21, 2013 via mobile

Service was excellent and friendly without being too intrusive.
The meat was perfectly done, not any different than in a high class restaurant in western Europe.
Everything from starter to desert was exceptional for Sri Lanka, especially in kandy it is very difficult to find a good place to eat.
The only downside is the price, you can expect about 3000 lkr per person which is 3 times above a normal kandy restaurant. That's still just 15 Euro, much for Sri Lanka but the food Quality is not really worth it.

The location itself is great too, many original photos from old Ceylon and a nice Ambiente to sit.
Do not expect locals in the restaurant, it is too expensive. But the ground floor had many locals at the separated bar.

“Peculiar, but fun. Limited recommendation.”
Reviewed August 2, 2013 via mobile

I'm sitting in the Royal Bar now. It's got a Spanish ambience, which is a bit of a surprise. A two guitar and drum trio just arrived and kicked off with some Ennio Morricone, now they are working the room, I'm not sure if they are singing in Spanish. Good though.
The place is very comfortable, feels like a hacienda, though it's probably British colonial, somehow (don't believe the Portuguese ever got here?). The beer is good value, the Wi-Fi is the best I've found in this country, there's a pleasant buzz of conversation instead of crap pop music.
What's strange? Not that I'm the only European in here, but that there a are no women, at all. Where I come from that's very odd.

“Beautifully refurbished”
Reviewed April 23, 2013

Tucked away on King Street, this Victorian establishment has been sympathetically refurbished and provides a lovely oasis for liquid refreshment and food. There are also hotel rooms. Service is excellent and there are many interesting photos on the walls from Kandy's past. There is a bar food menu and upstairs a quality restaurant serving both Sri Lankan and international dishes. One little downside for me was that at night the lighting is very dim - meaning that reading is nigh on impossible but isn't that the way of the world these days? Dim eco-light bulbs everywhere. Re. drinking, the Royal seems to attract far more men than women and after three evening visits I observed that most of the clientelle were aspirational, salary earning local men. I guess many short term visitors don't even know The Royal is there so unfortunately miss it.

Royal Bar made it on our list of places to visit after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor. We popped into Royal Bar to enjoy a cold one and have a bite to eat after exploring the downtown area. Ahhh, such a welcome place on a warm day! The garden room was bright, refreshing and colourful. The upper level housed a fine dining room, ladies' washroom, a few hotel rooms. This level was also very pretty, quite nice! Drinks were cold and lunch was very good. We passed along our recommendation to our guide in hopes he will share this gem with his friends and customers.
