“Unpretentious Luxury”
Reviewed October 13, 2012

I had the pleasure of staying over at the Clove Villas for one night en route to Digana. The room, Ebony& Ivory is delightfully decorated bringing out the true meaning of luxury. The en suite bath was fabulously large will all the amenities found in any star class hotel. The food- dinner and breakfast was served by an attentive staff who made me feel very welcome. This is a place that any traveler will feel the urge to return. Well done!

We arrived at this newly established hotel at 3am the morning following a midnight flight from Kuala Lumpur. We had already paid for a hotel that night in Malaysia and so were reluctant to pay for another one for the same night. The plan was to transfer from Colombo and hang out in the foyer until the next morning and then book in. Kandy was dark and quiet but we were met by Charlie and Sam who were incredibly charming, gave us a pot of tea and some lovely biscuits. We were all ready to settle in for a night in the foyer, but they had a room free and very kindly offered it to us to sleep in until the next morning when we could check in to our proper accomodation. As a result we had a marvellous sleep that we really didn't deserve.

Its a small hotel but the staff are very caring and simply can not do enough to help. They helped us out with hiring tuk tuks and advising on the proper rates to pay, advising which attractions we should see and helping us arrange our schedule.

The hotel itself is small but stylish. Our room at the top of the house was fabulous and its designer influences reflected the fact that the owner has only recently relocated from Melbourne with his charming wife. The room itself was very large, with a great bathroom, and two very comfortable beds (it was a triple room because our 14 year old was travelling with us). All mod cons were included including double sinks and a huge bathroom.

The food was good (mainly western) in particular the breakfast which they will serve you by the small pool if you are so inclined. If you like, they will serve your dinner on the small grassed roof top garden. The pool while not enormous is cool and refreshing. It does not suffer from that tropical defect of being not any cooler than the air outside. There is also a beautiful pool table and the guys are pretty keen players and keen to take on all comers (only to keep you happy, you understand).[

Guide books can only tell you so much. We found the staff and owners at this hotel to be particularly helpful in helping us to adjust to the reality of Sri Lanka and to find our way around without being ripped off (too much). Its a fledging hotel and I am confident that it will only get better into the future.
