The Hills Lodge is a nice, new Villa with 6 rooms about 4 km (2km on a very bad little road) outside Kandy with a very nice view from the Deluxe Rooms. My Deluxe Room was very big and quiet, the AC efficient (although a bit noisy). The bed was very comfortable. For breakfast and dinner there is a choice between 3 menus (western style, sri lankan and chinese), breakfast is 500 rupies, dinner 650 rupies, and all tastes very nice. since they have no licence they do not serve beer or other alcohol, but you can bring your own. staff is very friendly and helpful. laundry was cheap and clean. To get to Kandy you need either to walk 50 minutes or take a tuktuk (400 rupies, 10 minutes). there is no shop close by, so bring everything you need. to the hantana tea plantation its also a 1h walk. Wifi was free and fast. The judgement refers only to the Deluxe rooms, the standard rooms are smaller with not such a great view (however you can use the roof terrace).

Room Tip: the Deluxe rooms are definitly worth the extra money.

We stayed at this guest house toward the end of March, 2013 for two nights. It was a great experience for the both of us. The staff at the Lodge was outstanding. They took care of everything for us and were very helpful with advice on getting around Kandy and other parts of the area. The rooms were gigantic and quite a bargain (we booked through Agoda) with good AC and comfortable beds. The free WiFi was very fast and reliable as well. The traditional Sri Lankan breakfast was very delicious. It is worth trying at least once.
The house is about 3km up the hill so if you are looking for accommodations that allow you to walk to town frequently, this is not for you. However, the views are AMAZING from nearly every room there (there is one room with NO view below the dining area- it's nice, but try to get a different room). Also, we would recommend walking down into town (as opposed to a tuk yuk) in the morning for more views of the mountains, saying hello to the neighbors, and getting some exercise.

Room Tip: Ask for the room at the top. The lowest level room is nice but there is no view. Try the breakfast...

I stayed at The Hills Lodge at the very last leg of my 2.5 week Sri Lankan trip. Sure, there were some very memorable home stays but nothing compares to The Hills Lodge. We arrived after our estimated 6 hour train trip took 8 hours from Ella. Our tuk tuk driver then got lost and it took us about 45 mins to reach the guest house when it should have taken 10-15mins (make sure your tuk tuk driver knows the location). So after an exhausting day of travelling we arrived at around 8pm with welcome drinks and a full menu waiting for us to take our pick. The Sri Lankan was one of the best I've had and the owners will go above and beyond to make your stay as pleasant as possible.
It is a good 10 min tuk tuk ride into town, so if you want to be in the thick of the action then this place isn't for you, but nothing can beat the experience of being the highest house on the hill with breathtaking views over Kandy. After a full day walking around town it was so refreshing to escape the hustle and bustle and only hear birds chirping in the nearby trees.
The architecture is beautiful as well, with high ceilings and window design to take in the view from every possible angle.
Making our way up the steep dirt roads in the dark on our first night I was a little concerned about the distance from town, but no hotel or fast-paced guesthouse can compare.

We stayed here for 3 nights in our trip - best 3 nights we had! The house is absolutely lovely (very big) and located on the top of the hill, really enjoyed the view. Would highly reccomend the "deluxe" room on the top floor for only a few dollars more. The breakfast was among the best we had, and the staff always friendly and helpful. The owner himself is very sweet and brought us "welcome drinks". I was apprehensive about booking online, so glad we did! He was happy to give us his # once we arrived, +94812218545, if anyone else likes to call ahead like me.

The lodge is on the hills overlooking Kandy. I had a huge room with no view but very good all the same for 25usd with breakfast included you can't beat it. I had diner there as well, the local food was delicious. With friendly staff and very helpful in finding transportation to organize short trips around Kandy. It has six rooms on 3 level so be prepared to go up stairs. If you are looking for a place outside Kandy center I would highly recommend the Hills Lodge.

Only stayed for one night but wanted to stay for weeks! The first hotel I've stayed in Sri Lanka with great and subtle design sense. The rooms and bathrooms and hotel itself were all beautiful, the interior design was great. The rooms were huge, very clean, and very well decorated.
Amazing views of the sunset and over Kandy from the roof.
Very nice and accommodating staff, made me a delicious chicken pasta dish for dinner when my stomach wasn't doing so great.
A little bit out of Kandy -- I would pay 200LKR to get to and from town, but definitely worth it. The drive to and from the hotel is also spectacular, on small winding roads overlooking Kandy and the surrounding mountains.

Paid around 3000LKR for one night in a non-AC room. Wonderfully designed building, high ceilings in the rooms, great ventilation, AC was not needed at all, I didn't even use the fan! Nicest hotel I've stayed at in Sri Lanka for that price- felt like a fancy hotel rather than a lodge.

Also, very QUIET at night, a great place to catch up on sleep. And no bugs! Which is pretty rare...

We stayed a total of 4 nights at The Hills Lodge
Hotel - The Hills Lodge is located about 3km away from Kandy's temple of the tooth and it will take you a good 10-15mn tuktuk drive to reach the place. Pearched on the top of the hills you will enjoy beautiful views over Kandy and the surroundings. Buildings are almost brand new and very well maintained.

Room - Spacious and nicely decorated. Try to get the double room at the top floor as you will enjoy beautiful views from there. A/C and hot water available in all rooms.

Food - Always freshly prepared. Try their home made rice & curry; exquisite! Breakfast were customized to our needs / wishes.

Service - Kuma and Mahesh are keeping the house and will do everything to make your stay enjoyable and relaxing. We initially booked this place for 3 nights and ended up staying one more night as we felt good and could relax before taking the bus to the Hills District.

I would recommend this place for the friendliness of the staff, the cleanliness of the rooms and the exquisite food served at diner and breakfast.

Room Tip: Try their deluxe double room at the top of the hotel!
