Owner description: Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple. The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

Located along the lake in Kandy, this is one of the most sacred of Sri Lanka's religious sites. Its teeming with devotees who bring in lotus flowers as offerings. Very atmospheric- there are areas where incence smoke and smells wrap you, others where you are jostling with devotees and tourists and yet others that are so peaceful and quiet, that you can sit and contemplate the universe- if that is your thing. Not to miss!

There is a big fuss about this place and admittedly it was different. There were some interesting depictions of the life of the Buddha. But, of course the 'tooth' is kept well out of sight. I found the taxidermied pachyderm Tusker was really interesting.

Get yourself a guide to get the best out of the visit and aim to visit at night when it's really busy. It was evident from the thousands of people moving through the temple that the shrine has huge significance in the Buddhist faith and it was a valuable experience to observe.

Be prepared to wear long trousers or skirts to cover the knees. Nice to visit, but when we were there it was quite busy.

There were lots of local pilgrims for new year so the temple was crowded but everyone relaxed and no pushing. It gave the temple a good vibe.
