Owner description: Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple. The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

A beautiful temple, but very busy, and noisey I think evenings may be a little quieter. Worth a visit .

“A must see when in Kandy”
Reviewed April 7, 2014

I liked the 'devotion' of people there, the flowers placed inside the Temple, the peacefulness of teenage boys carrying flowers.....

“Yes it's a Temple”
Reviewed April 7, 2014

If you haven't seen other temples then it's well worth the visit, it's also worth visiting if you are in the area and haven't got anywhere better to see but please be aware that as with most tourist attractions in Sri Lanka the state charge foreigners exceedingly more to visit attractions than the locals.

A few parts of the temple and its associated buildings are quite interesting, especially if you haven't been to a temple before. As it is close to other attractions and close to the main market it's worth rolling several sites into one overall excursion, especially if you have to endure the abysmal driving standard in the country to get there.

If female, then remember to take or wear clothing to cover your shoulders and legs, otherwise you won't gain admission. Whoever you are, you will also need to enter the main temple bare footed and then pay a tip of at least 100 rupees afterwards. There's nothing to buy within the temple but if you need food or drink then there are numerous small shops as well as a small shopping arcade within a few minutes walk.

“Nothing great”
Reviewed April 6, 2014

This place has a timing issues like any of the temple. So advice to please check and go. If you dont go in those time, then there is nothing much to see in this place and you end up paying for entry.
One can plan to check out this place and the lake together enroute to other locations.
