Owner description: Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple. The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

We have seen a lot of sights here in Sri Lanka and found this the best. Downside too many people. The museum also held some interesting artifacts

The outside of the temple is more interesting than inside, there are a lot of things worth looking at around the temple

This is on all tick lists to Kandy , we with our guide made the trip along with many pilgrims to see the door opened to the tooth relic at 6 p.m and the opulent decoration inside the temple . This is a buddhist holy place but I am afraid we felt it we were some part of an enormous football crowd trying to exit the stadium as we shuffled , jostled around the temple . Glad we did this , ( and we had a guide ) but be aware if you go at door opening ( twice a day )

Legend and the belief is that molar tooth of The Buddha was brought from India and enshrined in this Temple . Temple of Tooh Relic is deeply revered by the majority Buddhist population of Sri Lanka . It is a major religious pilgrim center of all the followers of Buddhist faith not only from Sri Lanka but from all over the World . Visiting this place and offering prayers on Full Moon Day is of special significance . Due to these reasons there is large crowd on almost all the days but particularly the crowd becomes very large and difficult to manage of full moon days.
The Temple and the surrounding buildings are very well kept . The statues , stone carvings on pillars and door arches and murals on the interior walls are beautiful and therefore deserved to be a tourist attraction .
If you are deeply religious Buddhist person do brave the crowds and the long queues and visit the shrine where the crown containing the tooth is displayed .
If you are a normal tourist visit the complete complex with out getting in the queue and the crowds .
Happy viewing .

Better than expected, and rather beautiful. Interesting history and gives you a snapshot of part of the beating heart of Sri Lanka. We felt privileged to visit and were extremely conscious of not disturbing many of the devout waiting to pay homage to the tooth. Tip: Make sure you have your knees and shoulders covered, and be as respectful as possible. Also, you must take off your shoes, and some pathways are a bit stoney so if you have poor feet, beware.
