Owner description: Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple. The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

“Visit for its historical significance to the Sri Lankan people”
Reviewed November 11, 2013

Must-see attraction in Kandy, mainly because of the significance of the temple to the local people. Throngs of locals visit the temple daily to pray and make offerings.

Tourists had to pay to enter, but still a great experience to experience the local culture, history and religion. View of the temple is great and mystical during the evening puja. Come after the cultural dance which is just nearby.

“Beautiful place of worship”
Reviewed November 10, 2013

The Temple of the Tooth is the home of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Its golden roof can be seen glittering from many vantage points around Kandy, and is always a sight to behold. We were lucky enough to visit at the time of the Perahara, when the Temple was lit up with tiny lights. It was a breathtaking sight, especially as the sun went down. The elephants taking part in the Perahara were grazing on the lawns outside, and later we got to watch the lead tusker being dressed for the event Highly recommended at any time of year, but especially beautiful during the Perahara.

“Culture and flowers”
Reviewed November 10, 2013

Loved the ceromony and the flowers but most of all a living, working temple. We were lucky to arrive as the tooth ceremony took place, a little dramatic perhaps but clearly the locals making their offerings gave it an authentic atmosphere. Some of the side rooms are truly wonderfull.

“would have preferred a boat trip on the lake”
Reviewed November 8, 2013

Would have preferred to soak up the atmosphere of Kandy. Temple of tooth is sacred to buddhists but not much to see. We took lotus flowers and had a quick tour. The door to the tooth container was closed and I felt voyeruistic amongst the many sri lankans who had come to pray.

“Very atmospheric”

We visited during a Buddhist Ceremony and it was a very moving experience. Our guide explained what was going on and managed to gain access for us to some of the inner sanctum. Well worth a visit
