Owner description: Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple. The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

The Temple of the Tooth is a must-see for visitors to Kandy. While it can be very crowded with tourists, you are always clearly in a place of worship. The temple grounds are fascinating to wander around. As with other temples, you will need to remove your shoes -- we wimped out and walked around in our socks. The temple is spiritually important and visually impressive -- definitely worth a visit.

I had a great passion to visit this temple as I have read a lot about the place on different sites. I was shocked when the police officer asked my wife to remove her headscarf, if we wanted to get in. I explained him that being a Muslim, this is our religious practice and we also respect other religions. He should expect from us to visit this place with full respect.
To my surprise, he refused again and we had no choice but to return back from the main enterence. Anyways, just to inform that if you are wearing headscarf, you are not welcomed at this place.

Get a guide - they cost about $10 for the experience, otherwise you could end up wandering around lost for ages!

It is a beautiful temple, but if you are very keen on history, then visit the place or else could be easily skipped.
But felt the entrance fees was too high. And also the ticket counter staff were little indifferent to different country people.

You feel how holy the place is after you read the story behind it, but going around it you will not be overwhelmed.

The place was too full of tourists, and you can go around it within half-an-hour's time.
