Owner description: Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple. The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

“Beautiful but crowded”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

The temple is beautiful and worth taking some pictures. It was very crowded when we went but nonetheless, it was a good experience. It is best visited in mornings or evenings.

“viewing ceremony at Temple of the Tooth, Kandy”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

Don't miss this - make sure you take an offering such as lotus flowers and go with Buddhists from all over the world to see the tooth relic - the experience is amazing and the temple is a very impressive and spiritual place. Take time to see the Buddhist museum on the same site, really interesting & covers Buddhism from all over the world - it's an often confusing topic and the (free) guide will help explain it all!

“Beautiful is the word”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

Everything about this temple was so mesmerizing, we went in the night and the everything glowed. The guide took us in to see the casket in which the tooth relic is housed. Wish I had visited it in the day as well.

Temple of tooth relic,

Sri Dalada Maligawa, Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic,

Without a doubt, the Sacred Tooth Relic (Dālada) of the Buddha is the most venerated object of worship for Buddhists.

Its present house, the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Dālada Māligāwa) in Kandy, Sri Lanka (Ceylon) is considered the foremost sacred place of worship in the Buddhist world.

Tourist can visit Same time: International Buddhist Museum,Four Devales Shrines,National Museum, Kandy,The stuffed tusker Museum (a culturally significant “Raja Atha).
