Owner description: Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple. The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

“A place worth a visit ...”
Reviewed November 4, 2011

This is some thing you should not miss ...mould be nice if you take a guide ...avoid the recorded MP3 player ...Has some very nice collection of old photograps , relics and next to this is a museum which would take you to the past and give glimpses of the old culture..

“A Temple of Peace & Serenity”
Reviewed November 4, 2011

The entire city of Kandy is fascinating. Places to visit in Kandy and its surrounding areas are:
1 Elephant Orphanage
2 The Botanical Gardens
3 The statue of Buddha atop the hill
4 The Kandy Lake
5 The Temple of the tooth

The temple of the tooth is the prime attraction for a lot of visitors. The white structure with the stupas is a very peaceful place. A good time to visit is early in the morning, as the devotees visit the temple to gain blessings for the day before they go to the work places. Men and women with lovely white flowers in their hands make a bee-line to bow before the statue of Buddha. The silence itself as people pray in their hearts is a marvel to be experienced.

Ask around for the timings to see the relic - Buddha's tooth.
A word of caution about the proper attire for the Temple visit - Shorts are not allowed for both men & women.

“Best in the evening”
Reviewed November 3, 2011

The Temple of the Tooth is an absolute must when travelling to Sri Lanka. It's one of the most sacred places in the world for buddhists. Our driver insisted that we'd go in the evening because then it's less crowded and you get (a little) more time to see the shrine. Apparently you can hire an audioguide (I saw the numbers indicated) but there is little information in the temple so to non-buddhist a lot of the objects and especially the rituals seems a bit strange. Whenever the shrine is on display there are drummers that fill the whole temple with loud music. Not really a relaxing visit when the jetlag starts to kick in...

“Waste of time”
Reviewed November 3, 2011

This cost us 2000 Rs for the two of us and it was not worth the money.

The building is not that impressive and when you are inside there is very little to see. The tooth itself is locked away, but you can see a photograph of it! The same picture was in the lobby of our hotel.

It's nice to see the locals praying in the temple, but we felt we were just getting in the way.

If you want to see some impressive sites go to Sigiriya and Dambulla. I would highly recommend them!
