We enjoyed our stay here, it was classy and beautiful around the pool. The view to the river was really nice.
We were happy to have the best place for dinner because of our honeymoon. Food and service was also good.
But I agree with the reviewers, not a 5 star hotel.

Stayed here for 2 nights as part of a Mercury Cultural Tour, very luxurious hotel in a side street setting, reception staff all dressed in traditional costume and as always very friendly and helpful. The room was very well presented with excellent decor and facilities, including tea and coffee making facilities, slippers, bathrobes and toiletries. Food was spectacular, the choice was unbelieveable and I could have happily sampled it all, actually may have done. While staying here we went on the hotel's riverboat cruise, the Boatman (aka Gardener) was brilliant, everytime we saw something that took our attention he stopped the boat for us to take pictures. We did all the usual stuff while in Kandy, Tooth Temple, Cultural Show, City Tour, an experience and hotel we would definitely recommend.

If, like many, you're staying at the Mahaweli Reach because you want to see the beautiful Temple of the Tooth, you'll be fine. It's not a special event hotel. Rooms are well appointed (features everything you need) however along with the common area and dining room would do with an update. Breakfast buffet was average.

If you check in, go to the temple, go to sleep, eat your breakfast, and check-out you should be fine.

If you'd like to use the internet, print something, or access the business centre, you may have issues with slow service or communication (in english). One in our party had the pleasure of being accused of opening a beer, not drinking it and returning it to the bar fridge. This would have been highly amusing, except for the fact that she was nearly 70yo, didn't in fact touch the beer and received no apology when they failed to produce the beer in question. Don't be sold by the old world charm of this place. It's tired. Try somewhere else.

On the subject of the temple, do visit at night, it's beautiful with all the light and shade of the place. 6pm on a poya day was just special!

We stayed in a River View Suite. The suite is very spacious 2 lovely balconies helped us relax in the afternoon. It was a very pleasant stay. Was it worth the 350plus USD per night? Not sure. The location is beautiful, the atmosphere around the pool, the river and the open restaurant very nice. But things have gotten a bit old (like so many places in Sri Lanka), surely any other hotel at this price range in Thailand, Singapore or even the UAE would look very different. But that is fine. What was a bit sad was the very unattentive service of the staff, especially at breakfast. You have to run after them if you would like to have some coffee and then again to remind them. We actually weren't the only one noticing/complaining. On the other side, it seems if you tip them well in advance you get the full attention by nearly all staff (as we could witness during out stay). We think that is also very poor service quality. Overall, it is a relaxing place, just keep your expectations low and you will be positively surprised. And to the Mahaweli Reach, please give your breakfast crew some service training.

This hotel has the WORST service I have ever come across. It is so bad that this is the first time I am writing my review in trip advisor, and has made me create this account.

1) we are still at the hotel and just returned from the new years eve dinner. In the morning itself we had informed the manager that we are vegetarian, and he assured us there would be enough vegetarian options in the evening gala for which there was a compulsory charge of USD 80 per person, however when we reached there, there were only 4 vegetarian dishes (including the soup) out of a spread of 40 dishes. On informing the manager about this lack of service, He offered to bring us some veg salads, which were served to our table. On seeing them, we noticed something on that dish which seemed to be nn vegetarian so we asked the manager to confirm that this is vegetarian, to which he confirmed. We were still unsure so we asked him to check with the chef, so he brought the chef to the table. The chef too confirmed that this was veg 3 times. So we ate it... And immediately realised that it was some sort of non-veg !!! We called the F&B manager Prashant immediately and complained against this shocking revelation. Prashant seemed to feel bad but didn't act upon this ghastly lie! If the chef himself makes a false and misleading statement which has resulted in hurting the religious sentiment of the person, the hotel does not deserve to be open.

2) the service is truly atrocious. There is no pool boy at the poolside and it takes a minimum of 75 minutes to get an order from the time you are trying to track down someone to place the order with. They have a zero attitude of consumer service and to add to that don't understand english.

3) on arrival we asked for an adaptor, and 2 calls t stilldid not arrive. It finally came the next morning.

4) the housekeeping boy rang our doorbell at 8am in the morning after a late night out on 31st dec to clean the room.

5) the spa stinks and one cannot enter it

The overall look is highly deceptive. The pool looks inviting and hotel looks good from outside but has no class and no way in which can be classified even a 2 star forget 5 star that it claims.

This is by far and hands down the WORST service i Have ever come across in Asia and if you end up there, you nt only spoil ur holiday but regret it.

We were only here for 1 night. The room is spacious and has everything you need, the decor is a bit gaudy and outdated, but fine. Comfortable beds, clean sheets. Clean bathroom.
We ordered room service and the pizza was pretty bad, but the kids thought it was fine.
The pool area is very nice and big, though we didn't use it. Breakfast buffet was adequate with lots of choices and all pretty good.
Nothing really bad about this hotel, but nothing exceptional either - a decent place to stay.

A bit big compared to the hotels we normally like, but a friendly, smiling reception; great food; and pleasant gardens made up for that.

Our room didn't have a great view (other rooms across the staff car park) but we could see trees along the river in which thousands of fruit bats made their home - migrating in great clouds at dawn and dusk - great!

If you are exploring central Sri Lanka, this is a good place in which to make your base.
