“Lots of history but quiet”
Review of Ceylon Tea Museum

We visited in July, which isn't really tourist season as it's pretty hot. The museum was very quiet but we learnt a lot about the 2 main tea companies we know, Lipton's and Taylor's. You need to be able to walk up the stairs to the 5 floors of the museum, showing you how a factory would've worked.
It was very interesting but would've been better if everything was open (the cafe was closed as off season) so we could try the tea.

I cant believe we had this place to ourselves, The tea shops are quite cheap and the free tour guide makes this place. Not on the beaten track but its worth the small detour

The Ceylon Tea museum was incorporated on 9th January 1998 under Section 21 of the Companies act no 17 of 1982 and declared open to the public on 1st December, 2001. It is housed in the 1925 established Hanthana tea factory, 4kms from Kandy and at a height of 2499 feet. The museum consists of four floors. The ground floor has the Engine room and Rolling room where old machinery connected with the tea industry are displayed. The first floor has Drier room and furnace room and related machinery displayed. The second floor has sifting room and related equipments. The James Taylor museum and the archive room is also located on this floor. The third floor is allocated to Tea sales outlets where one can buy the finest selection of Ceylon Tea.

The entire fourth floor area is a restaurant where visitors are served complimentary tea. They can also take part in Tea tasting session. A panoramic view of the Kandy town surrounded by beautiful Hunnasgiriya Knuckles range and the Matale range of hills can be viewed through a telescope here. This floor also has the original cat walk platform which was used by the superintendent and the tea maker of the tea factory for monthly inspection of the roof and removal of any tea fluff.

This is another free of cost tourist attraction which I found very interesting! The staff takes you through all the stages of tea manufacturing starting with the freshly plucked green leaves! Very informative and they wrap up the session with a free cuppa of freshly brewed Sri Lankan tea!
