“Wonderful experience, very helpful staff, good breakfast, no driver accommodation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 24, 2013

I had a wonderful experience at Amanda Hills. The hotel room was very clean. The staff was very helpful and accommodated us when we wanted to change our room to a room with bigger windows. They also helped us with anything we required including extension cables etc. The breakfast was pretty good. Overall it was good value for money. Location was slightly distant from the centre (was a short drive), but decent nonetheless. They didn't have a place for the driver (tour guide) to stay, who was with us. Many hotels in Sri Lanka offer this for a small price. Since we didn't check this before booking, it was our fault. Just that people should know this. Would definitely recommend.

We loved the place, the staff was very nice. The manager himself took us on the trip to Pinawalla Elephant Orphanage and also to some local shops with spices and restaurants. The breakfast in the hotel is very good and all the food at the restaurant. Don't miss the Kandyan Art Association & Cultural Centre for authentic local stuff.

We travelled round Sri Lanka in three weeks, so I'll try and make this meaningful, rather than just telling you the room was nice.

Kandy seemed pretty poor on the hotel and restaurant front compared to other towns and cities we visited - everything seemed overpriced with poor service. The prices quoted in our guide book (2012 edition) were doubled when we knocked on their doors (in low season too). We decided to look South of the River (I'd advise looking North of the River or stay further out of town at Randehole or similar).

We arrived, and it was clear no one else was staying here at the moment. This is a 4 or 5 level hotel with 6 rooms per floor (at a guess). We were told 7500 for an AC room. Ridiculously overpriced since there were ants across the floor and wall, one wall had splashes of something on, the bathroom was pretty small and shower a bit grim. On the plus there was a satellite tv. We went away to try and find something else. There were many hotels on this road and all seemed as bad as each other (this seemed better than Sharon Inn and others)- thin mattresses and 6500 a night. We went back to negotiate on the price. Starting at 7500 for an AC room, we agreed on 4500 with the manager. When we were in our room we asked for the AC wand. "Oh, no", we were told, "it would be 2000 extra rupees for the AC wand to get it to work'....hmmmmm

Out of principle, we didn't pay it, and survived the night in the heat. We'd vow and declared to leave the next morning but decided to do a day trip instead so ended up staying for another two nights. This was more for the convenience and because we'd seen what the other hotels were like.

On the positives: Good breakfast
On the negatives: There wasn't much warmth and I could see how the business manager could get nasty ( as other reviewers have mentioned). Also the free wifi kept dropping out. I think the business manager was turning it off to save money. I felt bad even going and asking for it to be turned on. And once we were told it wasn't working because it was raining (ummmm...hello??? do I look like a fool?).Also we were asked to pay our bill on the second day because it was the end of the month and they need to settle the accounts?? Again, poor service, and we had to ask for a receipt - which they did reluctantly.

In terms of things to do: Go see the Kandyan dancing at the YMBA. There is a tuk tuk driver on the road leading up the hotel (Palitha) he has a tuktuk with ELephants all over it, inside and out. We paid 2000 rupees for a day trip to botanical gardens and Pinnawala seeing a tea factory, and many other things on the way. The business manager of the hotel was going to charge us a lot more than this (to profit the commission). Visit the Slightly Chilled Bamboo Lounge.

If you're stuck for accommodation, I'd stay. However, check out some options North of the Lake or Swiss Hotel. If you do stay, I would imagine this would be the worst hotel on your trip - it was for us.

I travelled to Kandy on a bit of a whim during something of a Hikkaduwa heatwave. I knew Kandy was a popular destination for many wonderful reasons, so thought I'd better not wing it and hope to find a room the minute I got there.

So as ever, I consulted trusty Trip Advisor who recommended Amanda Hills. I swapped a couple of emails with Jude, the ever-helpful manager, and was pretty thrilled to read there were rooms available. Confident I wouldn't have to rough it in the Knuckles, I hopped on a sequence of mad, colourful and exciting train journeys from Hikkaduwa to Kandy via Colombo - not for the faint-hearted!

Finding the hotel was a little difficult in that even our tuk-tuk driver had to ask for directions. The hotel's quite a way up a steep hill overlooking the lake but what the location lacks in convenience, it gains in terms of the view. It was a fiercely hot day, and we were greeted with chilled juice as we were shown our rooms - a simple but very welcome extra touch.

My room was a nicely-furnished, clean double room and came with air conditioning, a digital TV, a fridge and a small shower room (with excellent shower). Plenty of room for two of us, our luggage and the tourist bits and bobs you tend to accumulate in this wonderful country. The room also provided access to a large balcony shared with the adjacent room, with views towards the forest park, Buddha statue and numerous wild monkeys in the foliage across the way(!).

Breakfast was included and, I have to admit, pretty excellent. It began with a fresh fruit platter followed with toast, eggs, pancakes, coconut dahl (with a tasty naan), juice and a big pot of delicious coffee. Service was faultless and the staff offered smiles throughout.

The manager, Jude, made a point of ensuring we were sorted for tuk-tuks, itineraries, food and drink and this was appreciated.

Overall, then, a great hotel that offered lots for a good price, all the better for a bit of a spontaneous excursion. Thanks, folks!

Room Tip: If you can, go for a room with the balcony view. It's worth it just to watch the monkeys mucking...

Amanda Hills is an apartment type hotel in prime location of Kandy. It is situated on the hill overlooking the Kandy lake and the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. It has beautifully decorated rooms with nice wooden furnitures. Each floor has rooms and common living area. The hotel gives a very homely atmosphere with very hospitable staff. Mr. Jude Fernando, Manager is an excellent host. I had been in contact with him even before I went to Kandy and he arranged our airport pickups from Colombo airport and sight seeing tours of Kandy at affordable rates. The food was excellent with Indian touch as they specially took care of our vegetarian requirements. The roof top restaurant has an excellent ambience with a beautiful view of the city. In fact our stay was unforgettable and pleasant. Perhaps this is one of the best hotels we have stayed.

We had a wonderful time in Kandy and one of the main reasons was this hotel. The manager (Jude), the chef and all the staff were very friendly and nice with us. They introduced to us a very nice and honest driver (Persana) and a knowledgable nature trip guide (Gamini or G.B.). Both of them showed us a different and authentic side of Sri Lanka. We will recommend this hotel and these two guides to all our friends. Thank you all for a very enjoyable stay....

Room Tip: Ask before booking for a room with a view and no AC.
