“Best place to stay for Kandy”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

Stayed here for 2 nights with my husband and a friend at the start of our travels around Sri Lanka. Fabulous guest house with a homestay feel due to George and his wife's fabulous hospitality. George picked us up from the airport too and his brother drove us on to Adam's Peak at a very reasonable rate. Superb breakfast - beautiful home cooked Sri Lankan food including local specialities. Room was spotless and spacious with a little balcony to sit and take in the pretty view. Not far from Kandy at all and actually more ideal than other more central hotels as Kandy is quite a hectic and "rough and ready" city so we were relieved to be staying in our own little hideaway on the outskirts. Would recommend to anyone planning to stay in the area.

I was at Kandy guesthouse for two nights with my girlfriend while I was in tour. It is a very clean guesthouse run by Mr. George and his very kind wife who cooked delicious meals for us. The guest house is located next to a beautiful river and therefore is a nice place to relax. We got a room on top with a balcony with the direct view of the river. It was nice to relax in the balcony with the view of the river after our visits in Kandy. The bedding was comfortable and was well maintained. You could request for special meals or you could try the traditional Sri Lankan meals which we found very delicious. Kandy Guest House is the perfect getaway if you're spending a few days in Kandy. Mr. George also operates a tour company through which he organized our transfer to Galle. I recommend Kandy Guesthouse to anyone and everyone looking for good B&B accommodation in Kandy.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the top with the view of the river

We really enjoyed our time at Kandy Guest House. First, the Guest House is actually more of a homestay as you're sharing the common areas with the owner and his family (very kind wife and sweet children). Their home is very modern and cozy, and located in a quiet area approximately 8 kilometers outside of Kandy (quick, cheap tuk-tuk ride into Kandy). Our room and bathroom were very clean (actually, spotless), and very spacious. The outdoor patio was a real highlight too - reading while listening to the rushing water below was very relaxing!

Apart from the comfortable and clean lodging, the food and hospitality stand out. The owner's wife cooks the most amazing breakfasts and dinners - a real introduction to Sri Lankan cooking, and such a treat. Another added benefit of all of the guests eating breakfast and dinner together is the opportunity to meet other tourists from all over the world. The owner, George is very, very hospitable too - always eager to lend advice. It's very obvious that he cares a lot about his business, and making sure that his guests feel comfortable at all times. We'd stay here again in a heartbeat on a return to Kandy!

We stayed with George and his family in March 2013, and it was truly one of our most special experiences while visiting Sri Lanka. George could not have been more kind, whether picking us up and dropping us off at the station himself (in his very swish new car), driving us all over town to visit different sites or plying us with his wife’s fantastic Sri Lankan food. George was throughout professional, interested and above all trustworthy. It didn’t take more than about 5-10 minutes to strike up a rapport that lasted the entire stay. All the prices that George gave for transport and tours were in line with ordinary prices – certainly there was no sense of paying a premium, not at all.

As for the accommodation, it was perfect. We stayed in the larger triple room, which has a large balcony overlooking a quiet but flowing river. A very peaceful place to sit and read, with a cup of tea in hand. The room was spotlessly clean, and very comfortable. There are French windows that lead to the balcony that let in lots of light, but also good curtains to ensure that you didn’t wake up at the crack of dawn. And the food – well all we can say is that it was exceptional. It was the best that we had in Sri Lanka, topping meals in more expensive guest houses and hotels by a long way. George checked in with us about what we liked to eat, and dinner and breakfast matched out tastes. For once we were able to get a properly spicy Sri Lankan curry rather than the more cautiously spiced ones normally reserved for tourists.

Location wise, the guest house is situated outside of Kandy – to be honest all the better for being so. It is quiet – a lovely retreat from the bustle of Sri Lanka, without staying in the artificial environment of a soulless international hotel. It’s not far to the major sites of interest. And it was a different experience to staying in a guest house or hotel run solely for profit. There are only three guest rooms, meals were eaten together with others, which meant it was much more of a shared experience. It was lovely to experience for our stay there – the combination of all of the above meant it was the most relaxing portion of our holiday, certainly needed after some early starts for whale watching, safaris and climbing Adam's Peak!

Room Tip: If the triple room is available, ask to book it - it has the bigger of the two balconies.

I stayed at the Kandy Guest House for 3 nights in March.

If you are passing through the region, this place is worth staying just for the food itself! Every night was a treat and something to look forward to. Among other dishes, I had beetroot curry, fish curry, chicken curry, string hoppers, curd with treacle. All amazingly flavoured.

George the owner was also very friendly and customer-oriented. He responded almost immediately to my e-mails. His first reply was actually to tell me that the dates I initially wanted were unavailable. My experience in Sri Lanka is that a lot of guest houses take a while to reply even when they have vacancies. He provided great recommendations on what to do and when I was leaving, he gave me a lift to Peradeniya train station at 4.45 am.

Kandy Guest House itself is located near Peradeniya train station (1 stop from Kandy). It is a 100 rupee tuk-tuk ride to the guest house but George will try to pick you up from the station if he can. The guesthouse overlooks the river and is very quiet (except for the rare train passing by). It’s a great place to just relax, read and recover from more strenuous activities in the highlands (e.g. climbing Sri Pada) and is also ideally situated for exploring Kandy, the Botanic Gardens (which are located at Peradeniya), Kandy and the 3 temples of Embekka Devale, Lankatilake Temple and Gadaladeniya Temple. My personally advice would be to avoid staying in Kandy itself. The place is choking with traffic and car fumes. The room I stayed in was clean, cool and with new toilet facilities. I loved reading while seated on the comfortable wicker chair facing the large window overlooking the river. Definitely one of life’s simple pleasures.
